Answer
Microsoft Security Essentials protects against malware. With the Windows Firewall enabled with MSE installed and running, the PC is adequately protected as long as you also keep the OS up to date with all offered updated via Windows Update and practicing safe computing such as not clicking on links or opening attachments from unknown sources.
You don't need, nor should you use, any other security software that provides real time protection. You can use other security software, as desired, to scan the PC as long as it does not provide real time protection.

Both MSE and Malwarebytes are free so you don't have to purchase either unless its not for home use.

This is an interesting answer, but a little misleading

MSE states that it protects against malware but it does nothing to stop things like FunWebProducts being downloaded and installed in fact it doesn't even recognise it as been an unwanted or potentially dangerous program. Yet Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and others detect it with the realtime shields active and prevent it being installed.

If MSE isn't detecting a specific malware, please submit the suspected malware:

Please go to https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/submit.aspx and submit a sample of the suspected file(s).

Please choose "
Microsoft Security Essentials" in the product field.

Please note that on Windows 7 x64 and Windows Vista x64 both Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Microsoft Security Essentials are both able to run in real-time without conflicts.

On Windows XP (and possibly 32-bit editions of Windows 7 and Vista) adding file and process exclusions to Microsoft Security Essentials prevents issues.

That's one opinion.
If someone is experiencing unusual CPU activity or other issues and have both MSE and other software providing real time protection, the first step to troubleshoot this would be to remove one of the security apps.

Correct, fwedhead, i experienced the same problem, malwarebytes blocked a fake defender site from installing, where MSE did not take action.

There is another great antivirus software.. that is free but cannot be installed on any computer or gadgets... this Antivirus software are just for Humans. And the name of this antivirus software is "Common Sense 2011" i've found that antivirus on the Net ^_^

Using your Brain+Mind = Common Sense 2011 is a great defense from those viruses/threats to your computer ...WHY? because if u are searching on net , be sure to think first what you are searching for and its importance too. If u dont want for your computer to be eaten by viruses..... So Think First...

MSE + Common Sense 2011 = Great antivirus software
