Computer freezes during scan by Microsoft Security Essentials

Hello,
On running Microsoft Security Essentials custom scan on System Volume Information, it shows presence of threats. After running the scan for about an hour, the computer freezes. Please help.
Thanks.

It freezes for some custom search even in three minutes. I am giving details after some time.

Custom file, which I scanned
Local Disk(C:)->Documents and Settings->anil.ANIL-X9GFWCBPAK->Local Settings->Temp
This was frozen after 6 minutes of scanning.
Thanks in advance,
Anil

Rather than risk any data loss, it is best for you to open a support case with Microsoft.  Please see this link:

Which Operating System you are using?
Did you recieved any errors during scan?

I suggest you to update Windows and Microsoft Security Essentials. In Windows make sure you have latest service pack.
Check Windows update and download and install everything.

Have you removed all previous anti-malware (norton, mcafee, etc), even the free/trial versions that may have come with your PC?

If not, use these removal tools:
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91

Also, you do not have much disk space left.  You may want to look at cleaning up your drive.  Use the XP Disk Cleanup tool:
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup.

Then, do a degrag using:
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.  Be patient here - a defrag could take some time...

The Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter are suggested only to free up space and improve disk performance.

Let us know if you had any anti-malware to remove, and if that corrected the problem.

I'd removed all other Spyware, anti-malware etc as soon as I downloaded the Microsoft Security Essential.

I'll try defrag and disc cleanup.

I tried both. Disc Cleanup shows clean disk. When I try to run defrag, it sows there is no need to defrag.

Thank you

Hi
My computer froze within couple of minutes of starting the Disk Cleanup.
I have tried few more times but similar result came. I ran Defrag also, but it showed that I don't need to defrag.

Whenever I see a [relatively] small disk, such as yours, that has a small amount of free space left, I always assume that it is very fragmented, and that a couple of other problems exist.

Not related to the Security Essentials product or forum, but let's see what we can do.

Use disk cleanup again.  This time, go to the "More Options" tab, and select the button for "Clean up" on the System Restore section.  Do this to cleanup all the old restore points, which can consume a lot of disk.

BUT!  Before you do this, please backup any of your data to some external media.  This is just a precaution.

Once the old restore points have been removed, return to the regular part of disk cleanup and try that again.

If this fails, go to START, RUN, and enter MSINFO32.  In this program, go to "Software Environment", "StartUp Programs".  You should see anywhere between 10 to 30 programs.  If the list (which could take time to develop) runs into several thousand programs, there is a problem in the registry.  Not to worry, there is a fix for this.

Let me know what you see.
