Word Web App Table Cell

I have a table in a Word Web App document.  There is a cell with content in it.  The font color is black and it seems the background of just the text is slightly gray.  I can't edit or delete this content.  It seems that it is protected in some way.  What is going on here?  How can I remove this "protected" state and delete or edit this content?  I can't even delete the table row that the cell is in.  Thank you.

Hello Derek,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Office Community.

I would require some more information to help you better:

1) What do you find when you select the cell and go to Design > Cell Shading? Is there any color selected?

2) Do you receive any message stating the cell is password protected?

3) How did you try deleting the cell content?

Let's try deleting cell content by selecting it and then going to Layout > Delete Column.

You may also try editing the Word and try deleting the cell content and check if it helps.

Hope the above information helps. Reply with necessary information and the result to help you further.

Thank you.

1) No. Nothing selected. And the whole cell background is not shaded, just the text. A light gray.

2) No messages displayed.

3) I tried deleting the content by pressing the delete key and also by cutting. All variations of each.

Deleting the row or deleting the column does not work. Each option is disabled in the menu when the cursor is positioned on the row or in the column, in any cell of each.

This document is shared to 1 other person and I tried closing it and removing the share and still no changes.

As far as editing it in regular Word and not the Web App, I can't because I only have Word 2010 and it will not let me edit in that version and I am not trying or buying an upgrade. I should not have to. It should work in Web App version.

I have been using Google's versions of web based word processor, spreadsheet, etc for year or more and I have been slowly migrating over to Microsoft's versions since I am now using web based Outlook. I have been having nothing but troubles with these web apps PLUS the HTML edit in the Outlook.com compose for writing a new email message is so darned buggy I just about can't stand it.

I live just outside of Seattle and I want to move to MS since Google has been **** me off lately with their privacy issues. Please, let's get these editors fixed so they can be used.

Please! I hope we can get this "protected" cell issue fixed so I can move forward. Thank you for trying to help me.

Hi Derek,

I believe the content you are attempting to modify is within a field. Unfortunately, the Word Web App doesn't currently support editing of fields, which is why you are unable to delete the content or the cell in the table containing that content.

One current workaround is to open the document in any version of desktop Word and remove the field (the text the slightly gray background in your case).

Albert
