Error Code 0x404
Hello Christine,
What happens when you try to open other Office applications?
Do you receive this error message when you try to open Word or when you try to log-in to the account while using Office applications?
You may follow the steps below and check if Office application is activated or not.
· Open Word.
· Click on File, Account, on the right hand side on the page under Product Information check if the product is activated.
If the product is not activated, you may try to open Office application in administrator mode and then try to activate it and check if it helps.
Browse to the following location
Windows 8 32bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15
Windows 8 64bit: C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15
Look for Word or Excel application, right click on the file and click on ‘Run as administrator’ and then try to activate Office suite and verify the status.
I hope the above information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.
Thank you.

I also get this error (Office 2013, Windows 8.1) and when I right click on Word or Excel at the location
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office15
I am now getting that there is a fatal error and it needs to be repaired. I clicked on 'repair now'. Nothing has happened.
How long will it normally take for the software to heal itself? If this is going to take very long, then, will using some other free office product during this time adversely affect Office 2013?

I am having the same issue. It is asking me to activate my account every day, which is extremely annoying. Then it doesn't even let me open any of my Microsoft Programs and so I can't even get in to see if I can run as the administrator when I get the error 0x404.
As of right now, I can't even do my work because I need both excel and word to do it and it won't let me in either program which is extremely frustrating. I have tried rebooting my computer as well and it hasn't worked.
Have you found a solution that works to fix this problem so that I don't have to activate the account every day?
