Adapting Multilevel Lists in existing doc.

I have a document that was not formatted and now I am going back through and attempting to format the numbering in case of later need of adding a section.

The current document has the sections as follows

1.1

    A

       1

       2

    B

      1

      2

1.2 etc.

Is there an easy way of telling the document that it has a multilevel list so when need be I could, for example, add a section 1.2 after 1.1 and it would change the following sections.

I am working on Word 2010

Answer
Answer

How is the document currently formatted?

If you are not using paragraph styles, I recommend that you set up a multilevel list attached to the built-in heading styles and then apply those styles to text. You can customize the styles to suit your needs. For the numbering, follow the instructions at http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html.

On the other hand, if you are using styles, just click in the style you use for level 1 headings. Click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. Format numbering level by level and assign the style names in the process.
