Word for iPad table merge cells?

I inserted a table in Word for iPad, but I can't find a way to merge the cells. I need this function desperately. Is there a way to do it? If it is not supported, is there any workaround?
Surprisngly microsoft doesn't support that basic feature yet. i suggest you use Apple's Pages app, create a table in that and then if you need to export it into word format.

Thanks. It's really surprising that this basic function is absent. Sometimes it's clumsy to change to Pages in the middle of my work when I need to merge cells. I would rather use Pages from the outset. So, after all, I have to use Pages again for my work... :(

This is surprising to me too. Still this feature is not fixed.

I have iPad pro where pages is free but I have bough office subscription thinking that it will be more useful. But actually, not able to merge cells is such a basic feature, I am surprised it is missing.

Microsoft, please fix it asap.

I do have a workaround but it's quite inconvenient. If you create a template table on your computer with several extra rows on the bottom of that have a varying number of columns then you can delete rows until the on you want is ready for use. It requires a lot of setup work and you have to have an idea of what you might want to create the template but once you get it created it's not to bad to work with.
