Siri Dictation and Word for iPad

The iPad's dictation function is working intermittently at best with the new Word for iPad. 80 percent of the time it isn't working at all. The cursor advances when I've completed a dictated phrase, but then freezes without adding the words I've dictated.

I use dictation more than the keyboard when writing, so this makes the new Word for iPad very frustrating to use.

Does anyone have any advice?

Hi,

Are you able to use the Siri Dictation with other applications?

If the issue occurs only in Word, let us reset Word for iPad and then verify the results. To do that, do the following:

Ensure to close Word for iPad.

Go to Settings and select Word for iPad.

Now scroll down and click on Reset Word.

If that doesn’t help, do get back to us and we would be glad to assist you.

Thank you

Hi, I can dictate without problems in Word using Siri (Italian), unless the cursor is in a table.

If the cursor is within a table, dictating does not work. Could it be a bug?

Best

The dictation function is working reasonably well as long as I stay in the text field (after resetting the app as Girish M recommended above, many thanks). For some reason, when I say "new paragraph," I get two carriage returns instead of one. This doesn't happen in other applications.

Dictation never works in footnotes, and any attempt to dictate in footnotes will freeze the dictation function completely. Dictation sometimes works in a Track Changes comment box, but more often it fails and freezes the dictation completely. (What I mean by complete freezing is that dictation will no longer work in text or anywhere else. The app will still allow me to type, but the dictation button stops working. The only way to get the dictation function back is to close the document and reopen it.)

FrancescoCaviglia seems to find the same problem in tables that I find in footnotes and Track Changes.

In other words, there seem to be a number of dictation bugs in Word for iPad. I hope they get them worked out! At the moment, Pages remains a better choice for people who rely on dictation for productivity speed.

I'm not able to make sure you dictate in Microsoft Word 365 on a regular basis. It's working now but it won't work in Word. the cursor jumps but no letters are formed.

Is this the problem using Microsoft is working on because for me as serious?

Thanks.

I don't think this issue is confined to Word. I just installed OneNote for iPhone. Not only can't I dictate a successful "new paragraph," as soon as I say "new paragraph," text creation terminates, even though the line indicating that the device is hearing dictation continues until it times out.

I had hoped to use OneNote as replacement for or supplement to the iOS Notes app, but I guess this not going to be possible.

I experience the same issue in my iPhone 5S.  Dictation works successfully but as soon as I say "carriage return" or "new line" dictation stops.  No carriage return occurs and if I want to resume dictation I have to press the microphone button again.

I am now having Word inserting ?? for spaces, not punctuating at all. Has been happening for about 4 weeks now. Voice recognition is unusable like this.
