documents coming from Readdle documents synced folders open as read only.

Hi there,

I am a mac user, using microsoft word for Ipad (free version) along with Readdle documents. I have within Readle documents some synced folders with dropbox. I can open those documents in Microsoft for Ipad but they appear as read only! Word for Ipad asks me to duplicate but then i have two documents in my dropbox folder. Can that "read only" status be avoided? Please help.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Office Community.

Please provide more information to help you better.

1. Are you experiencing this issue only with Readdle documents or with other documents as well?

2. Do you experience similar issue when you create new documents using Word for IPad and saved on Dropbox?

3. If issue is only with Readdle documents, you may contact Readdle support for better assistance.

I look forward to your reply to assist you further.

Thank you.

Thanks for your answer.

Up till now, the issue is only present with documents coming from Readdle, i have no similar experiences elsewhere. Actually this is what happens:

Being in Readdle documents i go to a folder in Readdle documents which is a folder synced with my dropbox > i open a document within dat folder > i go to the share button and choose "open with". > I choose to open that document with Microsoft Word for Ipad (free version) > Microsoft word for Ipad opens it.> A dialog box appears wich says: read only document, click here to duplicate.

I could duplicate that document, edit it and save it again, but that leaves me with two of the same documents in my folder and i really would like to avoid that.

I could also avoid Readdle documents and open directly from Dropbox in word for Ipad. Then i don't get the read only status. But I like to work with the synced folder that is always available (also ofline) in Readlle documents

I also contacted Readdle but have no solution so far

Peter

the problem is actually broader then I first thought.

In fact ALL documents opened in Word for Ipad, coming from Readdle or other file systems like Briefcase pro or Filemanager, open in Word or Ipad, but also in Powerpoint for Ipad as read only.

the only way to avoid is to download in Word for Ipad itself or via Dropbox directly.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Try the following steps and verify the result.

1. Create a test document in Word application.

2. Save it on Drop Box as .docx file.

3. Open the same document in Readdle app and check the behavior.

4. Also reopen the same document in Word application and check if it opens in read-only mode.

I look forward to your reply to assist you further.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

I was facing the same problem as you. I found out this as a little workaround:

I don't open documents from Readdle's Documents anymore but directly from the dropbox or from the Word's or Excel's history. If you open the docs on the Ipad once (with anexisting internet connenction), you will still be able to open them offline. Office for iPad keeps an offline copy in the cache. Office for iPad will sync them as soon a connention is available again.

I still use the Documents app to have an offline copy of the whole dropbox content though. But I only open docs directly from here, if I have never opend them before (so they' aren't in the cache from Word). Then of course I'm facing the same problem as you do. And I have never understood why it should't be possible too open a document from 'Documents' without the read only status...

Please post a solution for this here, if you find one.

Kay

Indeed,

but, I only edit documents on a need to base, when i don't have acces to my macbook pro.

and the chance that it already is in cache is very small...

Only Microsoft can give us the answer why and how to avoid this problem...cause it is not Readdle related.
