Word in Office 365 is unable to select text after Office update

Word in Office 365 is unable to select text after Office update. It can select text in safe mode, but not in normal mode. I have disabled all add-ons. How can I fix this?

Chris J

Is there a message of some sort when you try and select Text?  Are you sure that there was not a dialog box open, perhaps with another document?  Does the problem occur with all documents?

If after restarting your computer and Word, you are still unable to select text in any document, then you might remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

saving it to your computer and then running it.

Then reinstall Office by logging into
www.office.com/myaccount with your registered email address and click Install Office.

Hope this helps,

I have since discovered that the fault only occurs on a second monitor attached to my laptop by VGA. For the past year I have used Word on this second monitor without any problems, but I now find that it will not select text on the extra screen, but if I drag the Word window to the laptop screen all is okay. The same problem occurs with Excel. I have also had a recurring problem with Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2825635) 32-Bit Edition, which keeps insisting that it needs to be installed, despite the fact that it has been installed multiple times. My version of Word is part of an Office365 subscription, and the laptop is running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Microsoft Support has told me that the problem is not an Office problem, but a Windows problem. I can select text in a PDF document on the second screen, so it appears that the problem is specific to Office, which makes me suspect the root of the problem is the Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2825635) 32-Bit Edition, which keeps insisting that it needs to be installed, despite the fact that it has been installed multiple times. Any suggestions?

Hi Chris,

Do you have Office 2010 and Office 365 running side by side on the same computer?

Since you are able to select the text in application safe, let us refer to the steps mentioned in the following article and check if it helps.

If issue persists, you may reply and we’ll be happy to help you.

I did have Office 2010 on my laptop over a year ago, but I uninstalled that and only have Office 365 installed now. Maybe there is some remnant of Office 2010 in the registry, but Office 365 has performed without a hitch on the second screen for a year, so why this problem now?

Hello Chris,

Thank you for replying.

Does the issue occur only with Office applications or other applications on Windows (Notepad or WordPad)?

You may open a Notepad or WordPad on the second monitor and then try selecting the text and check the behavior.

As for the query with regards to Office 2010 updates, you may manually remove all Office 2010 components from the computer if found any and verify the results.

Refer to the section ‘Remove Office 2010 manually’ from the following link.

I've noticed this as well, and it only started happening in the past couple of days for me.

It only seems to affect Word.  All the other office applications seem to be OK.

Restarting Word fixes it temporarily but after a few minutes you cannot click and drag to select text, you need to use the shift and arrow keys to select the text you want.  Running Word in safe mode also seems to fix it.

I'm using Office 365 on Windows 8.1.  All updates are current.

If you hold down the SHIFT key while starting Word until asked if you want to start it is Safe Mode, and you do that, can you then select text?

A lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes: See the Article “Why can’t I start my Office 2013 application at: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx For the error message Error: "Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this product." Try to run word in safe mode by typing winword/safe. If thatdoes not helpthen, in the search box type winword --> Word 2013 will be displayed --> right click on it --> Select Properties --> Go to the compatibility tab --> Check to see if there is a check mark next to compatibilty mode. If it is checked then uncheck it and then uncheck the option of Run as Administrator if its checked. Now run the word Also see my response in

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver
NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.oldas was mentioned in:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/microsoft-word-has-stopped-working-when-i-close/8375b5b6-4f7e-46ed-a02b-90152ecad287#LastReply
From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

That fix is described at ...

http://www.dilloway.co.uk/there-was-a-problem-sending-the-command.html It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

If you have a Canon 8350 printer, try using the Canon MF8000 UFRI LT XPS driver as detail in the post by Riad Amstha on April 14 in the thread at:

For the problem of nothing appearing when you start typing in a blank document in Word in Office 365 Home Premium, and you hear a bell sound with each keypress, but no characters appear, disable the SMARTInk add-in for an interactive whiteboard.

If none of that helps, then you might remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501 saving it to your computer and then running it.

Then reinstall Office by logging into
www.office.com/myaccountwith your registered email address and click Install Office.
