Page numbers in headers are all the same number--help!

I use page numbering after the first page of a letter (e.g.  [Name of addressee/Subject/Page "X" of "Total"]    I have no problem getting the text in the headers, which does not have to change.  But when I insert a page number, what I get is, for example "Page 3 of 3" on *both* page 2 and page 3.  And if I try to change the page number in the header on page 2 to read "Page 2 of 3", then it changes the header on page 3 to also read "Page 2 of 3".

I followed the word directions from Microsoft that are posted on line, but it hasn't worked for me.  What's the trick??

Susan

It sounds like you're just typing a number where the page number belongs. That will always show exactly what you typed. What you need there is a PAGE field, which updates to the correct number on each page.

Remove the typed number, leaving the cursor at that position, and press the Alt, Shift, and P keys together to insert a PAGE field.

Thanks.  In fact, I was *not* just typing in a number.  I selected the insert page number with the format I wanted, which properly put the text "Page 3 of 3" automatically in on the line it should have gone on.  It's just that it automatically said "Page 3 of 3" when it was on page *2* of 3.  I did try to manually correct the problem, but that didn't work.  I will try again using your suggestion.

Okay, I tried the alt-shift-P, which has now resulted in page 2  having the number 3 in the header and page 3 having the number 4 in the header.  At least it is now changing the number for the page . . .  ;)

Look at the status bar at the bottom of the Word window. (If it doesn't show the "page X of Y" there, right-click the status bar and click to put a check mark next to the "Page Number" entry in the menu.)

When the cursor is on page 2, does the status bar show page 2 like this?

If it says something else, what is that?

It's possible that the page numbering has been restarted, but I don't want to get you involved in looking for that if the cause is something else.
