I have just purchased office 365 and followed all instructions, but now i have not got a clue where and how to open up word so my children can start doing their homework.

Where you able to install Office 365 successfully on the system after the purchase?
If yes, then you would find the Office application icons in Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office 2013 folder. You can also create short cut
icons on the desktop by right click on the application icon you want and select Send to and click on Desktop (create short cut).
If Microsoft Office 2013 folder is not available in the list of All Programs, check if the program is installed on the computer by going to
Start, Control Panel and Programs and features.
If Office 365 is not installed, then you may download and install the new Office by signing into the My Account page on Office.com with the
Microsoft account you used to register or purchase.
