Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window... attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed.

When I try to open Outlook (in Office 365 Home Premium, running Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop) I receive the message "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window... attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed." As background, I installed Office 365 one month ago without uninstalling Office 10. Outlook was loading and running just fine until 2 days ago. I already tried running resetnavpane. This worked once. I have now uninstalled Office 2010 but the problem persists. What can I do next?

I am not 100% sure. But I know that the university (my server) uses Outlook as its mail service and states that it is an "Exchange service." I had no trouble logging in and viewing my e-mail every day for one month.

Hi,

This issue may occur due to multiple Outlook versions installed on the computer.

Let us remove the left over Office 2010 installation files by running the fixit from the following link:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/how-to-uninstall-or-remove-microsoft-office-2010-suites-HA104027750.aspx

Once done, you may run the fixit from the article below to completely remove all traces of Office 365/Office 2013:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

Now download and install Office 365/Office 2013 by logging into www.office.com/myaccount with the registered email address and click Install Office.

If the issue persists, then you may create new Outlook profile following the steps from the article below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918

Note: The steps in this article is applicable to Outlook 2013

To add an email account in new profile in Outlook 2013, refer the link below:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/add-an-email-account-HA102809480.aspx

Let us know if the suggestions provided is helpful to you.

Thank you.

The issue is intermittent about 1 successful launch in about 15-20..   I know Outlook is communicating with our exchange server b/c when I intentionally enter incorrect password it prompts again. Stops at loading profile and then errors out.

I do not think this is related to 2010 as I only have 2013 installed and the error surfaces for me.

My laptop running Office 2010 on Win8 does not appear to have the same issue.

Today it took 9  times for Outlook to finally launch.

Any ideas?

Well i know its late but i found a solution to this issue and I am not referring to the ones that suggest you reset the nav pane or repair a corrupt ost file. Unfortunately it's not a universal solution, it pretty much varies depending on your configuration settings. Reply if you need some assistance.

Can you please post your findings?  I've been seeing this in our environment lately and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason.  thanks!

I'm seeing this on my own machine and the other solutions didn't work. What is your solution?

Yes i'm having the same issue.  I can log onto Microsoft fine on my laptop and they are both Office 365.
