You have modified styles, building blocks, . . . or other content that is stored in . . . Do you want to save changes to . . .

I think I have a case of a little knowledge is dangerous in terms of creating templates. I created a template (you can see it and the file below at http://1drv.ms/1hMsHvr in my Public folder). Every time I create a file based on it, save, that file, and reopen it, I get this message--I haven't modified any styles, etc., that I'm aware of. I have to fix this. Short of recreating this template from scratch, I would certainly like to know what I can do to fix it. Any help greatly appreciated.

I think when I was creating my original template, I was saving some styles and linked something somewhere back to Normal.dotm. Just guessing, but maybe that provides a clue to my issue. I went back and renamed Normal.dotm, which had some styles in it I had apparently added by mistake. I hoped that would resolve it, but it didn't. I also removed those odd styles (EVENT NAME and Style 1) from the 7.itinerary.dotx template. No luck either. Word is also crashing when I open the finished template file. What a mess.

Hi,

Does the issue occur only with a particular template?

Let us create a test Word template and then check the behavior.

If the issue occurs with all Word templates, then you may refer to the steps mentioned under the section ‘Manual steps to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word’ in the following article and check:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

If you still have issues, you may reply and we’ll be happy to help you.

Thank you

Yes, only with this template. Please access them via the Public folder link. Thank you for any help.

I don't get any similar problems. I tried both opening the template and creating a document based on it in Word 2013 and Word 2010. I am not getting the message.

Your template does not appear to contain any building blocks per the building blocks organizer.

If you change a style and tell word you want that modification to apply to all documents based on the template, you would get a warning like the one you are seeing.

Thank you for testing, Charles. It appears that the problem lies with OneDrive specifically on my own computer. This issue reared its head a few months back, and no matter what I tried, nothing helped. My resolution was to buy a new computer since the one I had was about 3 years old--obviously, I can't keep doing that.

Word opened all these files without issue up until yesterday. Word now crashes routinely only when I click the file via Windows Explorer in the OneDrive folder or when I go the OneDrive.com, right-click, and click Open in Word. Word crashes every time and it must all somehow be related to templates being called into play as Word is trying to open from OneDrive. If I run Word in Safe Mode first, open a file via browsing from my OneDrive folder, Word does not crash.

I have a call scheduled from Microsoft today. Hopefully, they can resolve this. I have seen other posts in other places about similar issues with OneDrive. I'll keep you posted. Yesterday, Microsoft reinstalled Word for me. That stopped the building blocks saving prompt, but Word continues crashing. Ask me if I'm having fun yet. ;-)

I know of problems that arise in directly using/editing documents on flashdrives. I think I have heard of similar problems with GoogleDrive. I do not directly work on any cloud documents; just being hyper-conservative I guess. I have not even activated my Skydrive account. In Word 2013 all of my documents get stored on my local hard drive. I do copy things to/from DropBox but, again, do not try to directly edit them from there or create them there.

If I needed to keep things there for use off-site, I would set up synchronization software that would keep the documents/templates on the cloud drive synchronized.

Are you having fun yet? Isn't paying to be a beta tester fun?

I'm definitely not having fun yet. So the latest is that Microsoft says the issue is a Windows issue with a KERNELBASE.dll file (whatever the heck that is) and not a Word issue. Below is a screen shot of the dll file with the Application Error issue. Once I get my hands on some Windows 8.1 disks, they will do what they termed an "inplace update" I assume to correct the issue with this file. Then with any luck, all will be well. I'll repost when I have more information. Here's how the technician found the source of the issue: In Control Panel, click System and Security, Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.

Today is 5/17/14 and the in place update accomplished absolutely nothing. I've worked with Microsoft Level 2 technicians to no avail. They uninstalled/repaired/reinstalled Office 2013. They did an in-place upgrade of Windows 8.1 on my Windows 8.1 machine. The same issue has occurred on my Windows 7 machine as well as my Windows 8.1 machine. The Level 2 technician then tried using what seemed to be some third-party software to replace/recreate the dll file and then the computer would not boot and hung up on CHKDSK. What a mess. He felt there was a hardware issue, but I highly doubt that. I'm seeing lots of posts about Word crashing recently after some Windows updates went into effect.

The problem of Word crashing upon opening of a template seems to appear sporadically and then permanently, but today literally after months of trial and error, I have come up with some workarounds and conclusions. I will be very curious to know if they work for you as well. Here they are:

  1. Open Word in Safe mode first (Start menu, Run; from the Run dialog, Open box, type winword /safe; click OK) and then open your template. It should open without issue, but you won't have the full functionality of Word.
  2. Unlink SkyDrive from your computer. Then open your template file from https://onedrive.live.com by right-clicking the file, Open in Word. It takes a very long time, but the file eventually opens--you can see on the Word splash screen that the file is being called (Starting..., Contacting the server for information, Processing, Downloading: https://d.docs.live.net/[path to file name], Processing..., and then the file opens successfully.
  3. Download the file from OneDrive, save it locally (not in the OneDrive folder--anywhere else); then open it. This, of course, defeats the purpose of OneDrive, but it is a workaround. When you are finished editing your file stored on your hard drive, then upload it again to OneDrive.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has the same event error as I. Open Control Panel and do a search for Event Viewer. Under the Event Viewer pane,  expand Windows Logs; click Application; scroll to ErrorApplication error for the event that corresponds to your most recent Word crash upon opening of the template. If you note the date and time of the Word crash, you should be able to identify the related event easily by the Date and Time column. Look for the faulting module path and see if it points to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\KERNELBASE.dll. The Level 2 Microsoft technician used some software to replace this dll file, and then I had serious problems with my computer booting--it hung up at 10% Checkdisk--don't let them touch the dll file if you call them for help. Here's a screen shot of the latest event:

I had this symptom. I tested all manner of things, different drives, etc.

For me, the problem was gone when I disabled an addin that was installed, "Send to bluetooth".

I got the solution from a Charles Kenyon here:

http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/158300-always-getting-message-about-saving-changes-to-normal-dotm-in-Word-2013?p=932429&viewfull=1#post932429

I hope this solves the problem for someone.

What a happy life for me after trying your solution.

Apart from this, my users (I administer small office) also have a different problem when this send to bluetooth add-in is enabled where the users cannot copy their selection (e.g. highlighted text, etc.) .

Better to turn off this add-in all the time.
