Word Find/Search Results Don't Fit Properly in Navigation Bar

I'm not sure when this changed or if I did something, but now in Word 2013 when I search (Ctrl-F) the Results that appear in the Navigation pane on the left are 1.5 lines long, which means I often can't see enough to read the result. I think this used to be 2 or 3 full lines.

Is there a place where I can adjust how much text is displayed for Navigation Results when using Find/Search?

How many rows of text do others see for each of the Results?

Thanks,

Colin

Just drag the border of the Navigation pane to make it wider.

Just drag the border of the Navigation pane to make it wider.

That would change the WIDTH. How do I change the HEIGHT or NUMBER OF LINES allocated to each Find Result on the Navigation pane?

Well, the number of lines displayed for each search result depends on the width of the Navigation pane. The amount of text displayed can't be altered, though.

That is not consistent with what I see. Changing the width has zero bearing on the height of the Find Results. It does change the number of words that appear per line, of course -- obviously wider means more words fit. But I still get 1.5 lines per Result. See image I've attached.

By 1.5 lines, I mean that I get 1 line, plus the top half of the next line. The rest of it is clipped by the next result. This can't be what it's supposed to look like. I'm sure it's supposed to be an integer number of lines. This looks awful.

Some of the search Results are in the top row, which I can read, some are in the bottom row, where I can only see the top half of the word on the second row (because it's only showing a half row).

I don't believe it used to look like this, I'm pretty sure it used to show 2 or 3 lines. Something changed.

How do I fix this?

.

OK, that is definitely something different. I haven't seen it myself. Have you tried repairing Office?

Quick Repair did not have any effect. Trying Online Repair now... will report back.

Online repair also did not work. Looks exactly the same as it did before. What could cause this? It's like it thinks it's using a smaller font or something. I have not changed any of the system fonts. Is there any setting in Word for font size for the Navigation pane or any other setting that might affect this?

Hi Colin,

Create a test document and check if the issue persists.

You may also remove and re-install the Office and verify the results.

Refer this article to remove the Office suite:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

Once Office is removed, go this link http://www.office.com/myaccount to reinstall Office on the same PC.

Thank you.

As noted, I have tried and the problem persists following both the Quick Repair and the Online Repair.

I am willing to do this if needed to fix, but clearly with zero other issues, there is something very specific that is causing this and there doesn't appear to be any guarantee that reinstalling will fix. A full uninstall/reinstall will take me a lot of time with reconfiguring everything back the way it was. The Online Repair did not fix.

Some questions:

1. How do I preserve my Outlook OST file connections across an uninstall/reinstall cycle?

2. Are there ways to preserve my other settings and try to reapplying them in some order following a reinstall? I would check after each piece if the problem returns and undo that setting re-apply and report back here which setting was responsible, but I need to know where settings are stored so that I can re-apply them by file.

3. What does an uninstall/reinstall catch that the Online Repair does not?

4. Before taking this plunge, can someone first consider a targeted way to fix this that does not require a full uninstall/reinstall? Surely someone must know what could be responsible for this specific problem.

Actually, if you don't have any other problems with Office, I do not recommend a full uninstallation/reinstallation. It may be time-consuming and there is no guarantee that it is going to fix the issue.
