Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will not open after Windows 8.1 KB2919355 Update

After updating to the new April KB2919355 update for Windows 8.1 I am unable to open any Word, Excel, PowerPoint files or the programs themselves. All other Office programs from Office Professional 2013 work. The error code I receive in Windows Event Viewer for Word is this:

Faulting application name: WINWORD.EXE, version: 15.0.4605.1001, time stamp: 0x5328ef0c
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

The only way to view this error is through Windows Event Viewer, it does not pop up automatically.

I have tried every fix listed for "Office does not start" threads, reinstall, repair, cmd codes, Office Configuration Analyzer Tool 1.2, etc. The only solution I have come across is to uninstall the update. Any one else experiencing this or have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks.

Hi there,

I am also experiencing similar problems after the April update. My Outlook stops at startup Outlook logo with the message "processing", while my Word will freeze once the window is open. I never got any error message from Microsoft. Both programs do, however, function perfectly in Safe-mode. I tried repair, manually removing the April updates, etc. Nothing works except uninstalling and then re-installing. However, last night my Windows 7 updated itself while i was asleep and the same problems returned. I'm glad to know that I am not alone with this issue.

My Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will not even open. They crash before launch. Outlook works fine for me though. Safemode for me also does not work for either of the three. Uninstalling the update fixes the problem for me, but uninstalling and reinstalling Office doesn't. Sounds like similar, but separate problems. Also, I'm running Windows 8.1, so it's not the same update, KB2919355, for Windows 7.

See the Article “Why can’t I start my Office 2013 application at:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

If that does not help, then you might remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

saving it to your computer and then running it.

Then reinstall Office by logging into
www.office.com/myaccountwith your registered email address and click Install Office.

Hi Doug,

I have already tried all of that. None of it works. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint do not launch in safe mode. Either from Windows running in safe mode or the command line version. Office still does not launch after being reinstalled even if I use the Fixit to remove it.

Doug,

I figured it out!

I forgot I had Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit software installed. Disabling their protection appeared to solve the problem. It seems strange that they think Microsoft Office is an exploit. I guess someone at Malwarebytes wasn't paying attention when they created an exploit blacklist.

Thanks for the help!

I used the Fix-It utility from Microsoft to uninstall Office 2013 for Home and Student, hoping beyond hope that this would correct the problem I'm having in opening Word.  Having done so, Excel and PowerPoint open perfectly, just as they had been doing prior to the Fix-It uninstall.  Word, however, continues to malfunction.  When I hover the mouse pointer over the Word icon, I can see the minimized program starting page, but there is no way to make the program open to full screen.  Is there something wrong with the Winword.exe file?

That's great!  I'm glad the programs are now opening for you.  I am not running Malwarebytes, however, and cannot open Word documents.  :(

A lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes:
See the Article “Why can’t I start my Office 2013 application at:

Try to run word in safe mode by typing winword/safe.
If th
at
does not helpthen, in the search box type winword --> Word 2013 will be displayed --> right click on it --> Select Properties --> Go to the compatibility tab --> Check to see if there is a check mark next to compatibilty mode.
If it is checked then uncheck it and then uncheck the option of Run as Administrator if its checked.

Now run the word

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver
NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.oldas was mentioned in:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/microsoft-word-has-stopped-working-when-i-close/8375b5b6-4f7e-46ed-a02b-90152ecad287#LastReply
From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

That fix is described at ...

http://www.dilloway.co.uk/there-was-a-problem-sending-the-command.html It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

If you have a Canon 8350 printer, try using the Canon MF8000 UFRI LT XPS driver as detail in the post by Riad Amstha on April 14 in the thread at:

For the problem of nothing appearing when you start typing in a blank document in Word in Office 365 Home Premium, and you hear a bell sound with each keypress, but no characters appear, disable the SMARTInk add-in for an interactive whiteboard.

If none of that helps, then you might remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501
saving it to your computer and then running it.

Doug,

I am having the same problem.  Used the Fix-It tool and reinstalled Office.  Excel, Outlook, etc, work fine, but Word will not open.  I get the "repair" choice, which doesn't do anything.

I am not running any "fun stuff" or add-ons.  I am not running any abnormal apps or strange programs.  This is a work computer.

The malware and virus protection is Microsoft Security.

What's up?  I need to have Word operational.  Why should I have to spend several hours trying all of the stuff you suggested, especially since I'm running on a non-optimal WiFi connection.

Windows 8.1 with all the current updates is the OS.

Thoughts?

Thanks.
