Word 2013 word count not working properly

Until this week, if I chose a paragraph or two Word would display on the bottom of the screen 158 of 800 words. Now it only displays the total amount of words and I have to click on the total number and a box pops up showing the breakdown of the words. How do I get it to give me the summary again by only selecting the words I want counted?

I'm using windows 8. if that makes a difference.

Hi,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Office Community and posting your query.

A quick question before proceeding:

Are you experiencing this issue on a specific Word document or on all Word Documents?

Let's run 'Fix it' from the following KB article and then highlight word/paragraph and verify the result:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822005

Note: Save the ‘Fix it’ before running it as you’re working on 64 bit Windows. If you're unable to run 'Fix it', follow instructions mentioned in the section 'Let me fix it myself' and see if it helps.

IMPORTANT: Ensure to back up registry before deleting or modifying it. Refer to the following steps for instructions on how to back up registry.

1) Open Registry
a) Hold Windows key + R.
b) Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:
regedit
2) Back up the registry following below mentioned instruction:
Click on File, Export, name the backup and then click on Save.
Note: Ensure that All is selected in Export range.

I hope the above information helps. Please take your time to try the suggestion and let me know the results at your earliest convenience.

Thank You.
