word 2013 navigation headings missing

Hi,all, I have a word doc generated on Word 2007, which has headings for every section. But when I opened it in Word 2013, I found that some headings are missing/skipped as seen in the navigation panel. So I am wondering how to fix it? How to bring back those headings so I can navigate the content properly?

cheers

Answer

The next thing to check is the "outline level" assigned to those paragraphs. That's usually assigned through the definition of the style applied to the heading.

Click in one of the headings that are missing from the Navigation pane, and then click the little arrow in the bottom right corner of the Paragraph group on the Home tab. If the Outline Level box in the Paragraph dialog doesn't say "Level 1" or whatever the heading level is supposed to be, that's why the Nav pane isn't picking it up.

Since you're using automatic numbering, the Outline Level box is probably grayed out. If you have to change it, you need to go to the Multilevel List dialog. Follow the instructions at http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html exactly.
