Word 2013 is crashing when attempting to open OneDrive files

Lately, I've been attempting to open Word documents from my OneDrive account and as it attempts to open the document, Word (2013) itself crashes.

If I download the file from OneDrive and attempt to open it locally, things work just fine.

The machine I'm having issues with is my work computer which is running Windows 7 Pro x64 all the latest updates.

I have been bouncing back and forth between my home computer with this document, which is a Windows 8.1 x64 Update 1. Also running Office 2013. I have not attempted to open the document again from my home computer since this has started happening, however I will attempt this evening to see if I am also getting the problem there.

Hopefully someone can assist.  I have been having the same problem on two machines, both running Windows 7 and Office 2013.

It's only happening in Word 2013 on my Windows 7 machine at work. Any other Office file type that I attempt to open works just fine (Excell, PowerPoint). And it's still only when trying to open a document directly from my OneDrive. It was working just fine, this is all of the sudden new.

If I attempt to recover or repair the document after opening it again (post crash) it just comes out as a garbled mess of characters and empty lines.

I get a generic error that Word has crashed and asks if I want to check online for a solution (which it never finds one), close or debug. The details are rather limited:

I am getting this same exact problem. When opening my document from the OneDrive directory, it seems to hang on attempting to open the underlying template, and then crashes. If I move that file to outside of the OneDrive directory, I can open it.

This seemed to have started after a raft of office 2013 updates happened on April 18.

I also get a peculiar side-effect: if I attach the document to an Outlook e-mail after directly downloading from OneDrive, my recipients who have Office 365 are being asked to sign in with a message that says "Call us overprotective, but we need to verify your account again before opening this document." This message seems to be tied to a SharePoint issue. If I modify that document locally before sending out, there is no sign-in dialog that pops up.

I have been able to get the file to open if I uncheck "Use Office to sync files faster and work on files with other people at the same time" that is in the OneDrive settings dialog, and was recommended as a solution in the question about Microsoft being overprotective, but I haven't been able to get around the peculiar side effect.

Yep, I get this too. Basically Onedrive is unusable for me with Windows 2013; I just get "Word has stopped working"; since I often have multiple documents open from various sources this is terminal as far as using Onedrive is concerned for me. A solution would be more than welcome. I'm using an MS Surface Pro, Windows 8.1, if this is relevant. I don't get any option to see the details; Word just restarts. It's a shame, since I'd like to use Word across multiple computers. Looks like the end of the line for my Onedrive experience, unfortunately.   ( I realize this forum is W7, but still...)

Hi.  When you say that you removed onedrive from your control panel, did you uninstall it?   Wouldn't this mean that it doesn't work anyway or am I missing something :-)

Please consider that I am working in Windows 8.1. I have an App called OneDrive and I found in my control panel a program called SkyDrive. This is what I removed (disinstalled). My App is still running and working

Thanks for clarifying.  I'm in Windows 7 so the problem/resolution could be different.  There's no residual stuff left after the change from SkyDrive to OneDrive.   I guess Microdoft will eventually get around to fixing this.

Cheers
