Word 2013 Hangs on Find/Replace and Review Pane

After the March Office update was pushed out, Word 2013 hangs when attempting to open the Reviewing Pane, and when doing a Find/Replace (Ctl-H).

It works properly in Safe mode, but when I check for Add-ins, there are no Active add-ins running (i.e., all add-ins are in the "Inactive Application Add-ins" section of File>Options>Add-ins ).

Any suggestions for how to fix or work-around this?

Since Word works properly in Safe mode, macros are a likely explanation after all. If you exit Word and rename the Normal template, does that fix the problem permanently?

There are no macros active (it even fails in a completely blank document), and resetting the Normal template to the default version did not fix the problem.

What DID fix it is disabling hardware acceleration (the common denominator was the enhanced graphics of the dialogue box; also, I discovered that Word worked properly when started in safe mode, even though all the add-ins were already disabled in regular mode, so a search on "Word works only safe mode" found helpful instructions).

See this article for the instructions I used: http://m.kapilarya.com/fix-office-2013-works-only-in-safe-mode . Adding the registry entry for DisableHardwareAcceleration did the trick.

A more satisfactory solution might be to use an updated display driver.
