Word 2013 frequent crashed in Win 7 Pro

Please help!  I have a paper due and I cannot figure this out.  I have read several forum articles, so please read the whole post as I have tried many different potential fixes.

OK, so last night Word 2013 started crashing frequently.  Originally, the problem seemed isolated to the command for pasting a chart linked from Excel, but now I'm getting frequent crashes when I do various things like saving or even opening documents.

The details of the error are:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
  Application Name: WINWORD.EXE
  Application Version: 15.0.4517.1003
  Application Timestamp: 51a7523e

  Fault Module Version: 15.0.4517.1003
  Fault Module Timestamp: 51a750cd

  Exception Offset: 00000000005b75f8
  OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
  Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
  LCID: 1033
  skulcid: 1033

As I mentioned above, I have read through many of the responses to similar questions, but none of them have worked or they have been for different versions of Word or different operating systems.  If you post a response please check to make sure that you are posting something that is applicable to Word 2013 and Windows 7 Pro OR please let me know what I need to do that's different from the instructions that you provide.

I went to Control Panel -> Programs -> Office and ran a repair and restarted the computer.  Didn't work.

I have tried to start Word in safe mode.  However, the problem can be recreated even in safe mode.

Even though these instructions are for Word 2010, I tried to follow the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541.  The only change that I remember is that I had to change some instructions to version 15.0 (Word 2013) rather than 14.0 (Word 2010).  The results of the steps are as follows:

Deleting Word Data registry subkey - No change.  Problem continues.
Deleting Word Options registry subkey - No change.
Rename Normal.dotm - No change.  Note that when I tried to rename the file back to the original name (Normal.dotm) I got an error that the file already existed (because it was recreated by Word when I tested the fix).  You actually have to go into the folder itself and delete the new file and then revert the old name back.
Disable Startup folder add-ins - Running the command that the KB says to opens and empty folder, so this fix was not applicable.
Delete the COM add-ins registry keys - did not fix the problem.

I have tried with success to recreate the problem in other word documents, so I don't think that this is a single corrupted document.

I realise that you have already tried a number of things in the following.

However, a lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes:

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver
NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.old as was mentioned in:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/microsoft-word-has-stopped-working-when-i-close/8375b5b6-4f7e-46ed-a02b-90152ecad287#LastReply

From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

That fix is described at ...

It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

  • Since I don't seem to be able to change the color of my responses, I will put all my responses in line with your answer but set off with bullets like this.

I realise that you have already tried a number of things in the following.

  • Thank you for such an in-depth response.  I had seen your earlier postings and had tried to do many of the things you recommend.  I truly appreciate you taking the time to put this together.

However, a lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes:

  • The add-ins that I see are the following with notes.  I only know what the first one is.  I don't know or remmeber installing the others, so I'm assuming they came preloaded with the software
  • PDFMaker - I definitely need this to stay active, but I know that's not your problem.
  • Date (XML)
  • Instant Messaging Contacts
  • Measurement Converter
  • Then there are some "Inactive Application Add-ins."  I'm assuming the inactive ones aren't causing the problem.

See the Article “Why can’t I start my Office 2013 application at:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

  • Started Word in safe mode.  Created new document.  Pasted in a random image.  No problems so far.  Opened up Excel to get to a chart.  Tried to paste the chart in as a linked chart and Word crashed.  Same error as before with oart.dll as the "Fault Module Name."
  • This indicates that the problem is not related to add-ins.
  • Note that when Restarted (in safe mode), I was unable to paste the chart with the regular right-click paste method either.  Even a CTRL+V doesn't work.  So there's something deeper going on here.
  • End result is that the above KB article is not applicable as far as I can tell.

Refer to the following website for information on repairing Office 2013\365:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/repair-or-remove-office-2010-HA010357402.aspx

  • As I mentioned previously, I did this already.  Still having issues.

See Office 2013 install woes - http://office-watch.com/t/n.aspx?a=1834

  • This is about installing Office 2013 subscription service.  As far as I can tell this is not applicable to me since I am not using that version of Office nor am I attempting an installation.  If you link me to documents pertaining to other versions of Office or other operating systems, I'd like to know what I'm supposed to do with them.

See the KnowledgeBase article “Office 2013 applications crash on launch at the splash screen” at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2813143

  • Again, this does not seem to be applicable to my problem.  Most of the time the problem is occuring not upon starting Word, but upon performing certain actions within word.  I do not believe that I have the software and drivers that this article refers to either.  I pressed Start and ran a search by typing in some things to the little text area at the bottom right of my screen and could not find evidence of this software/drivers that are causing problems in the KB article that you have linked above.  I tried to find "displaylink" and "dlumd32" (without the quotation marks, of course).  Neither showed any results.  The DisplayLink page that is linked to in the KB article has a download for "USB Graphics Software."  I am not using a USB monitor, if that's what that's for.  The second link is for "Actual Multiple Monitors," I am using multiple monitors, but I don't want to install a bunch of drivers and software for hardware that I do not use.  Again, I don't see any evidence of DisplayLink software already on my system, so I don't think that I need to update it.  If I'm missing something like a better way of searching for whether I need this, please let me know.

Or see the KnowledgeBase article Error: “Something went wrong and we can't sign you in right now” when trying to install Office 2013 at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2811180/en-us/

  • Once again, I'm using a regular Word desktop based system.  There shouldn't be any need to sign in to Office 2013.  Nor am I attempting any sort of installation.  This software has been on my computer for a while.  This tells you to clear cookies and stuff like that.  I really have no idea where you're going with this as my problem has nothing to do with the internet or my browser as far as I can tell.

  • OK, I do have Nvidia stuff on my computer, but I don't know how to tell whether this is applicable or not.  I tried calling the phone number that provided help to the user of that issue, but I'm on hold right now and I've also been directed by the recordings played on the phone to support.microsoft.com/oas.  We'll see how that goes.  What was your intent in directing me to this?  I'm completely guessing as to what I'm supposed to get from this link.  I'd rather not call Nvidia unless there's some way that I can actually know that this is an Nvidia problem.  What would I say if I did call them?  "Hi, I was told to call you because MS Word is crashing"?
  • UPDATE: (After 35 minutes on hold) The phone number is for paid support (or at least my product ID doesn't support any sort of free support.  Same thing with the /oas site according to the tech I talked to.

Do you have Abbyy Finereader installed on the PC? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013.  See:

Office programs may crash with the FineReader add-in installed at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2755838

  • Again, the fix listed in that KB article is about disabling add-ins.  This has not worked as mentioned in the OP.  Besides, I don't see Finereader listed in either the "Active Application Add-ins" or the "Disabled Application Add-ins" listed in File -> Options -> Add-Ins.

Do you have “Fun Tools” add-in? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013

  • Same answer

Do you have Toshiba Book Reader installed on the PC?  It has been reported that uninstalling that brings Office back to working status.

  • When I type "Toshiba" after clicking Start, I don't see any programs come up.  This leades me to believe that I do not have Toshiba Book Reader installed.

Do you have the Acrobat PDFMaker add-in.  It has been reported that uninstalling that overcomes an issue with a message appearing that states "The document contains macros. Macro support for this application is disabled. Features requiring VBA are not available. Would you like to open this document as a read only?"

  • I do have Adobe PDFMaker.  However, the problem that you describe is not the one that I'm having.  Besides, when I disable Add-ins by running the program in Safe Mode, I still get this issue.  I also tried disabling only Adobe PDFMaker and running Word normally.  Still had the problem.

  • This is just more stuff about add-ins and installations and crashes during launch as far as I can tell.  I don't see anything new in this thread.  Could you tell me what you want me to look at here?

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver
NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.old as was mentioned in:

  • OK, you keep coming back to this and I do have Nvidia stuff on my computer, so I'll look deeper.  I go to Device Manager and under Display Adapters I see NVIDIA NVS 5200M and something from Intel.  Under Montitors, I see two "Generic PnP Monitors."  Under Sound, video and game controllers, I see something from IDT and four instances of "NVIDIA High Definition Audio."  I don't see any other category that has to do with graphics, videos or monitors.

From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

  • This one gave me hope ... I disabled hardware graphics acceleration and then tried to recreate the problem.  I was able to paste into a new document, however, I didn't get much farther.  When I tried to save, I got the same error.  (It has occasionally happened over the last 24 hours that I don't get the error immediately upon pasting but shortly after, like on the next save.)  To be sure, I tried it again.  I opened Word (which gave me an error message because it had just crashed.  And again pasted into a new document.  That one saved okay ... weird.  But a couple more tests indicated that the problem is still there.  Almost every time at some point in the process of opening, creating, pasting, saving or closing, I will get the crash.  All crashes are attributed to that same dll.  So I went back in and re-enabled the hardware acceleration.

  • This is not the error that I am getting.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

I would be happy to provide my skype, phone or e-mail contact information to someone who thinks they can help ... I've now spent the better part of what was supposed to be a workday on this.

I have now completely uninstalled MS Office, ran a Windows Update (no relevant updates), and reinstalled MS Word.  I also clicked through a couple of the drivers and checked them for updates.  All seemed up to date.  The problems did not go away.  But I did notice some suspicious things that made me think that Word was not completely uninstalled.  First, the Start Menu usually highlights new programs, and in this case, Microsoft Office folder was highlighted, but inside the folder Word and Excel were not (although the rest of the programs in the Suite were highlighted).  It was almost like my computer thought that Word and Excel were already on the computer prior to the install.  Second, when I opened up Word for the "first" time, it still had some of my user-associated information, like my recent files.  I did check and saw that it did not have my old autocorrect settings, but obviously there are some remnants of the old installation hanging around.

So, right now, I am following the instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501/en-us in order to do an uninstall.  This has a "Fix-It," which is supposed to remove Office.  However, it is far from clear whether this application actually does anything more than the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, which was the way that I previously uninstalled.

I am also running a registry cleaner to try to get rid of any more hangers-on that might be left behind.  The registry cleaner that I am using is the freeware version from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner.  It was recommended by a university IT guy.  I ran the cleaner using the default settings.  I am in the process of doing that now, but have to close my browser to complete it.  More later ...

Picking up where I left off.  I ran the CCleaner with all the default settings.  I ran its Clean Up tool as well as its Registry tool.  That at least seemed to clear some of the data that Word "remembered" upon reinstall.

Then I went back and reinstalled Word.  I did a restart and when I restarted my computer there were lots of Windows Updates, to my surprise.  But then I realized that the updates were just due to me installing Office again (i.e. all the updates that I had done since my initial install were not there in this new install).

Installed the updates, restarted the computer, and the moment of truth was upon me.  I opened Word and everything appears to be okay through my first 15 or so minutes of using the program.  I was wary of opening the old document in case that in any way was the source of my troubles, and when I tried to open it, apparently Microsoft had marked it as a problematic file (since it had "caused" a crash upon opening it on more than one occasion).  At first, my workaround was just to open this file in a different word processor, which would've worked fine had it not been for the fact that my document had footnotes which weren't readable by my other software.

But bypassing the error message and opening the old file in Word didn't seem to cause any problems.  Just to be on the safe side, I simply copied over the text of the footnotes and put them in their proper place in the new document.  Then I exited the old document without saving any changes and I will be deleting that old document soon.

Let's hope that the new install of word and the fresh start in this document will be all that is needed.  I'll post back if I run into any problems.

... and moments later, my hopes were dashed.  I opened another file and then tried to change the appearance of Word because there were these stupid symbols and lines at the top of the screen (some sort of aesthetic theme/design).  Well, while I was doing that everything crashed.  Same error message.  Same everything.  I am about to put my head through my monitor.

Hi,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused while working with the Microsoft Word 2013.

Have you used any other version of Office before?

Try manually uninstalling the Office as suggested in the section ‘Remove Office manually’ from the following article to ensure there are no leftovers for Office 2013.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

In addition to this you may also try manually removing the older version of Office as well.

Refer to the following KB article for more information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Note: Take the backup of the registry before modifying it.

Once Office is removed, restart the computer and install the Office 2013 and then verify the results.

Let us know the results to help you further.

Thank you.

Nope, no older version of Office.

The KB article doesn't say what the manual uninstall does above and beyond what the Fixit does.  Please note that the KB article (at least the Fixit) does not actually remove all the "leftovers" from Office 2013, as I mentioned previously.  The Piriform CCleaner did a better job than Microsoft's tool.

Other than that I followed your instructions prior to writing before.

It's gone a couple days without crashing though, so fingers crossed that it was just a problem with trying to paste linked images/tables, which I suppose I can live without.

Hi,

You will be able to find the manual uninstallation steps in the KB 2739501 under the section ‘More information’ and then go the section ‘Manual steps to remove Microsoft Office 2013 MSI installations’ or ‘Manual steps to remove a Click-to-Run installation of Office 365 Preview, Office 365, or Office 2013’.

Note: Take the backup of the registry before modifying it.

Thank you.

I just glanced through that section and I will try that next time I run up against the issue.  It does seem to be a deeper level of cleaning than the standard uninstall or the Fixit tool.  Thank you for directing me to that.

For now, no crashes recently, although I haven't tried to copy, paste a linked image yet ... I'm saving that until I have to and have some free time in case things go haywire.  I spent almost a full day working on this last time, so I'm not really wanting to intentionally recreate problems right now.
