Word 2013 freezes for ~5 secs on save with message "Uploading to OneDrive"

I'm running into an annoying problem where every time I save a Word 2013 document, Word hangs for about 5 to 10 seconds with the message "Uploading to OneDrive" on that status bar.  I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro and the document is saved locally to my SkyDrive/OneDrive folder.  I would expect that the SkyDrive/OneDrive sync would save these files to the cloud but instead it looks like the Microsoft Office Upload Center app is doing it instead.  I *think* that what's happening is that Microsoft Office Upload Center is blocking Word 2013 from running while it uploads to the cloud.

It also appears that Word 2013 thinks it's opening the OneDrive version of the file rather than the file that's living on my local disk even though the file in my Skydrive folder says "available offline".

Is there any way to tell Word 2013 to open and save the local file *only* and tell Microsoft Office Upload Center to chill out and take a break?  Basically, I want the Windows 8.1 SkyDrive/OneDrive process to do the uploading to the cloud when it gets around to it rather than MOUC's immediate upload.

If it helps, I get and install my version of Word 2013 (and the rest of Office) via my Office 365 subscription.

Thanks,

-Ben

Hi Doug --

Thanks for writing back.

Actually, the "Copy remotely stored files..." checkbox was already unchecked.  I played with checking and unchecking that option both with existing and new docx files.  I also have "don't show the Backstage" checked and "Show additional places for saving" unchecked.  I get the same lag/freeze/hang while the save is happening for any Office 2013 file in a SkyDrive/OneDrive directory.

Another unusual thing is that when I go to the Info tab on a document (File menu) and click on "Open File Location", it pops open a new browser window and takes me to OneDrive's website.  I would expect that it would take me to the folder on my local machine using explorer.exe.

I just re-built my laptop about a week ago and that's when I started having this problem.  Is this new functionality in Office/OneDrive?

Thanks,

-Ben

If you save to a SkyDrive\OneDrive folder "on" your computer, you are actually saving to the cloud.

Not necessarily.  If the Skydrive folder on Windows 8.1 is set to "available offline" then you are saving (or should be saving) to the local disk and the Skydrive process replicates that to the cloud in the background.

By default, it's set to "online only" but that's not the configuration that I'm using.

Word 2013 seems to be ignoring the fact that it's on the local machine and it's skipping the local disk entirely.

Solved

After trying everything I could find to stop Word 2013 (Home-Office click to run)from 'uploading to OneDrive' within Word, and crashing; having word think it was saving to a (local) network folder solved all problems for the single user that had no use for sharepoint. Note: the OneDrive folder must be behind the users folder (a Microsoft default).

Solution: in the options for word, change the default local save path (and save to this UNC path) i.e. '\\WorkPC\users\scott\onedrive\documents'  ('\\WorkPC\users' ... - network path was the default sytem created UNC path for this machine and user (discovery is turned on) (NOTE: use your computer name for "workpc" and the correct user name and path to the documents folder for the profile wanting to save directly to the local onedrive folder....

Office Upload Center does not allow syncing a network UNC path (local network location), so it does nothing (finally kinda disabled), and OneDrive in Windows 8.1 sees the change on the local machine and syncs.

Note: while this post may help some understand how to resolve the issues, it is outdated; current settings options in Win10 and Office 2016 may be better utilized to resolve this issues.  Be sure to undue any crazy changes done in Office options, etc., before implementing current available settings changes.

Hi Monkey57 --

Good workaround for the freeze.  Unfortunately, the changes don't seem to replicate to OneDrive anymore.  The OneDrive "metro" app thinks that it's uploaded to OneDrive but when you open in a browser, the file doesn't exist.  I wonder if sync service ignores *.docx files because it thinks that the Office Upload Center has it covered?

Hmmm.

Ben,

It took the desktop OneDrive system tray icon a few moments to process the change,  if i refered back to the metro tile icon, or from the browser of an offsite pc, it showed the new doc, and changes in a changed doc. The UNC change was made, after running virus and malware scans, using the office removal and reinstall procedure (many times), moving the OneDrive folder (in Properties-Location), then putting it back, letting onedrive rebuild, and logging out of the ms-account and back in, and some cache cleanup ... win8.1 onedrive sync works, Office upload center was not disabled or deleted after the latest install, although i took a hammer to it many times before the latest office reinstall  ..... onedrive sync (not pro) is a few ticks slower to show the change on the cloud, than copying it to a concurrently editable hyperlink.... doc and docx files synced,

upon further testing, everything worked, save of new and edited doc or docx, and opening a doc from metro, even saved smoothly through the 'uploadng to onedrive" within word, opening a doc from a UNC saved back to the local onedrive-docs folder and synced thru OneDrive, all tests but one "save as" worked and i could not duplicate the error a second time

... at least the doc is saving where it is told or opened from, and not a hyperlink at office upload center's discretion, and crashing in word on a "save as" or "save", as onedrive (Microsoft-OS) and Office Upload Center (Microsoft-Office) compete for a document sync.... Office and Win8 and I seem to have a different thought on what saving to a local folder behind the onedrive folder means...

Hi there,

I have still not be able to solve the problem. My default save location is " C:/users/USERNAME/skydrive"

I have deleted all registry files with msosync and .exe files but this still happening!. I have had skydrive for the last 6 months and I have not had this issue. It seems that by default all files are being stored on cloud storage even when the files are "available offline"

Try : " change the default local save path (and save to this UNC path) i.e. '\\WorkPC\users\scott\onedrive\documents'  ('\\WorkPC\users' ... - network path was the default sytem created UNC path for this machine and user (discovery is turned on)(you can drive there in windows explorer under "Network" and copy the path from the address bar) (NOTE: use your computer name for "workpc" and the correct user name and path to the documents folder for the profile wanting to save directly to the local onedrive folder...." also make sure you right click on skydrive in the folder tree and make sure it is set to work offline.
