Word 2013 crashes when deleting an equation

Hi,

Word 2013 crashes sometimes when deleting an equation. This can be reproduced consistently (on my computer at least) by opening a blank word document and pressing the following keys in order (without the spaces):

a <alt => m i n ( <backspace> <backspace> <backspace> <backspace><backspace> <backspace>

After the sixth backspace is pressed in this case, word immediately crashes. Is there any fix to this problem?

Thanks!

Reed

Whoops, had a typo, <alt enter> should be <alt => (meaning, pressing alt and the equals button at the same time). The key sequence to make it crash is:

a <alt => m i n ( <backspace> <backspace> <backspace> <backspace><backspace> <backspace>

Assuming that I interpreted your instructions correctly so that before pressing the backspace key, I have

in the document, then pressing the backspace key 6 times, leaves just the "a" in the document and Word does not crash.

Hope this helps,

Here's what it looks like for me:

It looks you you did type it the same way I did. Are you using Word 2013? Your equation editor is blue, while mine is gray.

I did try it in both 2010 and 2013, the latter on a Samsung Slate.  For convenience, the screen shot was taken in Word 2010 simply because it is on that computer that I respond to questions in the forums.

In 2013, the appearance is identical to your screen shot with hardly any of the letter a being visible.

Hope this helps,

Sorry for being persistent; this bug is pretty annoying.

I reproduced this bug on three seperate computers, two which were running Windows 8.1, and one which was running Windows Server 2008 R2. When I type up to the open parenthesis, I get:

Note, even though a space appears between the 'n' and '(', I didn't type it (Word inserts it automatically). Next, after pressing <backspace> 5 times, I get this:

which is an empty equation box. If I type <backspace> again, Word crashes.

If I switch to use Overtype mode, as shown in this screenshot:

Then, after pressing typing the 'a' and the equation, then pressing backspace 5 times, I get the following instead:

In this case, Word doesn't crash after pressing backspace, but instead deletes the equation. It seems that I shouldn't be able to get an empty equation box, but instead should always get "Type equation here." Without overtype mode, I just get an empty equation box though, which crashes when I press backspace inside of it. Perhaps other settings also affect it - with the default Word settings, it will crash.

I work a lot with equation editor in Word, and I now have a chronic fear of hitting backspace when my cursor is anywhere near an equation. I always highlight the entire equation up the previous line and hit delete to remove an equation. Just wanted to let you know that you aren't the only person to experience this, and I can reproduce using exactly your steps on every computer I've tried.

I have also had this had to me multiple times and have lost a few documents to it. I do exactly the same thing, only use delete when using formulas. Cant believe more people have had problems with this

I recently faced this problem. Very annoying, in particular for people who use equations a lot. Really appreciate if it is fixed.

Can it have something to do with recent updates (for Sweden)? It never happened to me before (e.g., in 2014) although I use equations quite frequently.

Exactly the same thing happening with me - Windows 7 Enterprise.  Extremely annoying, and I teach math so I'm always using the equation editor.

Same issue as well, and is quite the pain! especially when you haven't saved for a while and auto recovery doesn't make it in time. using Windows 8.1 pro and Word 2013.
