Word 2013 changes saved document to .tmp file

Hi - I have only had office professional 2013 a short time, working on a Dell with windows 7 64 bit, recent new documents I have created have disappeared (although they show in "recent" list), when I try to open it says "file cannot be found" - I then search my documents folder and find a TMP file there, I can open this in word and it is my missing document! - why is it renaming it to a TMP file? - renaming the document to what it was before and saving it cures the problem, I have seen other posts regarding this but they are all on older office and windows versions and don't really give me an answer.
Office or Word doesn't do this, in the case of an Office file 'crashing' there is an auto recover option. The recovery file is generally named somedoc.asd http://support.microsoft.com/kb/107686

I beg to differ but mine does!

you can see from the screen print of my recent documents 2 x WRL documents I have opened - these are documents I had saved correctly but ended up as .TMP files!

Clean boot your PC then check if the problem is replicated, what you are seeing is caused by a third party process and not word or win

Sorry about the delay in replying but I am having trouble replicating the problem - I will keep trying as it is no good doing a clean boot without being able to replicate the problem to see if it will cure it.

I have the same problem, except its through our Macs that have Microsoft Office 2013 installed on them. Its not a constant occurrence but when it does happen the users (students) are saving their word document to their desktop or documents area which is on our school LAN and word automatically changes it to a .tmp and half the written is missing. I got a student to write the work up again and re save in the same location and it saves fine. It seems word is picking and choosing when and what to save as.

Are you running Windows in a virtual machine on a Mac or is it Word for Mac? In either case, I think you should post in the Word for Mac section:

Another quiet old thread on this same problem, WITHOUT any solution to it...

If this only happens with DOCX documents why should it not be a Word problem?

It doesn't happen with XLSX files, not even DOC files.

The user works on network files by mapped drive.

Since you mention a mapped drive, see if the user can save normally to the local drive. If that works, then there is an issue with the network.
