Upgrade to Office 2013 broke embedded spreadsheets in Word Documents

I have been going through the community looking at similar problems but none have resolved this issue.

After an upgrade to Office 2013 all of our embedded spreadsheets in our Word documents are not editable.  We get the error message saying that Excel needs to be installed, which it already is.  We think that it is looking for the old version of Excel which is no longer available to us.

Any thoughts.....

We found a solution, a lousy solution but it gets us back up.  The error message above messed things up.  After you click OK the Excel Process was still active so each restart of Excel tried to activate it.

  1. If the error message was displayed reboot or go to task manager and kill the hanging Excel process
  2. Open Excel and disable all Excel and COM addins. Close Excel.
  3. Open the word document
  4. Do a "save as" back to itself and let word convert the document to 2013 format
  5. Close the document
  6. Open the document
  7. For every embedded spreadsheet
    Right Click
    Select WORKSHEET OBJECT
    Select CONVERT
Make sure "Convert to" is selected
    Select MICROSOFT EXCEL WORKSHEET
    Click "OK"
  8. Click on spreadsheet and verify that status bar says:
Double-click to Edit Microsoft Excel Worksheet
  9. Save the Word Document
  10. Close Word
  11. Re-enable all add-ins
