Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Office Community.

Please provide more information to help you better.

1. Which dictionary did you download and install in Word 2013?

2. What happens when you search for thesaurus?

3. Is the dictionary app enabled in Word 2013?

To check the same follow the steps mentioned below.

1. On the Insert tab > Click on My Apps.

2. Select See all option in the drop down.

3. Check whether the Dictionary is listed.

To view Synonyms, right click on any word> Synonyms.

You do not need to download any dictionary to view Synonyms or Thesaurus.

I look forward to your reply to assist you further.

Thank you.

Thank you for your quick response.  Two answer some of your questions:

I downloaded English Stands4 dictionary.  I only downloaded it after the thesaurus didn't work.  The dictionary does work but the thesaurus didn't and still does not.

When I use Shift-f7 the thesaurus box does auto pop-up on the right and gives me the message synonyms awaits but one never appears.

When I try and right click to get some quick synonyms it reports no suggestions on any word but the non-working thesaurus is available but offers no assistance.

Auto check, spelling, dictionary work fine just no thesaurus

thanks again

Hi,

Thank you for replying.

Have you tried entering a word in the search box in the Thesaurus window?

Try starting the Word application in safe mode as mentioned in the article below and verify the result.

Note that the built-in thesaurus (the one that you can start with Shift+F7) doesn't require any apps or add-ins. Verify that you have the correct language(s) installed in Word. Also, try repairing Office by starting setup in Control Panel.

I have a similar issue... new Dell laptop windows 8.1 touch... just set up everything on Saturday... did quite a bit of writing on Monday in Word and the shift+f7 key worked just fine for the Thesaurus. Today when I tried using the shift+f7 all I got was the capital letter K. Seems like something has changed. I tried restarting my machine several times, also checked in Word Pad and Publisher and got the same results.

Forgot to mention that I finally got the Thesaurus to open using the fn+shift+f7... but I want it to be just the simple shift+f7 that it's always been.

When you have to use the Fn key, that is determined by your keyboard, not by Word or Office.

Thank you... stranger than fiction? The problem has resolved itself, not sure what I did but I no longer need to use the fn key. :)

With a bit of luck, the keyboard will continue to "behave." :-)

Really... well that didn't last long. Not sure why it stopped working again but I have tried everything imaginable including setting up a macro in Word to toggle the Thesaurus on and off... but that ONLY works if I go into the Window Mobility Center and select the Fn key... so that means that if I want to use a multimedia function, I need to go back into the mobility center and select multimedia key. Apparently these tiles only appear on a Dell computer. It seems that I should at least be able to change this function from toggling the Fn key on my keyboard.
