Serious Type Lag when using Track Changes

Since the last Windows Update it has been impossible to use track changes.

After a few changes typing slows down to a crawl, saving also is slow.

Tried saving local copies, tried saving on onedrive, it happens anyway.

Add-ons are disabled.

Hardware graphics acceleration is disabled.

Happens in .doc and .docx documents, small or big.

I need a fix asap because I am a copy editor and I cannot work.

Hi,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community.

Did you restart the computer once the updates were installed?

Verify if other Office applications works fine.

If the issue is only with Word, then try changing the default printer and check the result.

If it works fine, then you need to update the printer driver, or contact your printer manufacturer to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver as there might be some corruption in the printer driver.

Note: You may use ‘Microsoft XPS Document Writer’ as default.

Click on the link below to know how to change your default printer.

If the above steps fail, you may also try the steps from the link below:

Let us know the result.

Thank you.

Restarted after the updates.

I only use track changes in Word.

Changed printer, reinstalled printer drivers.

I renamed normal.dot

Still happens with some documents, but I can work on another computer with Office 2010.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for replying.

Have you tried the other steps mentioned in the Kb article posted in my previous post?

Try the steps below and check the result:

Open Word in safe mode:

· Hold Windows key + R.

· Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

WinWord /safe

Once opened, try to access and work with one of those files which has issues with and check if the issue persist.

Let us know the result.

Thank you.

I have the same issue. Copy-editing with Word is almost impossible. Followed all the suggestions here, and no changes, although the problem does not persist in safe mode. The problem does not persist when hiding "insertions and deletions", but that's not a workable solution. Any other options?

Has anyone been able to find a solution to this issue?

We have the same problem and I have spent weeks trawling though forums and implementing any fix I can find but none have been successful.

Is this a inherit problem with the way Word2013 was developed and can't be fixed?

Why have their been no official patches from Microsoft to fix this issue?

I am revising a manuscript using Track Changes and having a serious problem with the lag in typing. It is so slow and sluggish that I am unable to work. I tried calling a Microsoft phone number but the reps (they said they were for installation only) hadn't even heard of Track Changes! There was no other number to call. Someone said this was a result of updates, but not being a techie, I have no idea. Anyone know of a solution or a place to call?

Have you tested starting Word's Safe mode? If that works around the problem (temporarily, for the session running in Safe mode), then the cause of the problem is likely to be a poorly designed add-in.

To start in Safe mode: Exit Word if it is currently running. Hold the Windows logo key as you press R; in the Run dialog box, type winword /safe and press Enter.

I have this problem on all documents once they get to a certain length.  Short documents are ok.
