Old form fields not working after saving Word 2013 doc

Am working with a fill-in order form created originally as a Word 2008 docx. My usual practice has been to open the latest version of my form, which is saved in an unlocked state. I make edits and then, after locking the form, I save it as a file with a new name to use for sending to clients for placing orders. Since updating to Word 2013 I notice that after I lock the form I am able to see that the check boxes and pull down boxes work. But after I do as "save as" to create my locked file for customer use and close the file, when I reopen it the fields on the form no longer work. The check boxes are locked and the drop down menus are not available. It appears as though the form was locked for all edits, but it was locked to allow for the form to be filled in.

What should I do?

There are two contradictory methods for protecting forms.

The first is the legacy "filling in forms" protection. This locks everything except form fields.

The second is the "restrict editing - no changes - with exceptions" that works with content controls.

If you have protected your form in the "no changes" mode and have not marked your form fields as exceptions, they will not be editable.

Generally, you do not want to mix the two types of fields.

Word 2008 is a Mac application. You may also want to ask this question in a Mac-specific forum (with a link to this thread as a courtesy).

Actually, I am working on a clients computer which uses a Windows operating system. They had a consultant update their system and were guessing when they told me what version the original file had been created in.

When I protect the file I have always checked the box to allow the form to be filled in. The fields look the same in the new version as they did in the previous version and I never had a problem with the form until this client updated their version of Word.

Let me restate the situation. To protect my form, I go to the Developer Tab, select Protect Document and then select Restrict Format and Editing. I check the box to allow only this type of editing and check the box Filling in Forms. I click to start enforcing the protection and follow the steps regarding the password. I save the document under a different name (the clients preference). When I open the new document, none of the form fields are available. There are check boxes and menus in the original file. I have double checked to make sure that the original unlocked form contains all of the correct form information.

Is it important to know what the Word version the form was built in? Sorry if my use of terminology is imprecise.

What's import is to know what type of form it is.  If you want to send a copy to me, I will investigate the issues when using it in 2013.
Hope this helps,

Okay I have the file from my client. I'll send to your email address.
