Hi Beth,
As I understand Word and Excel applications get a spinning wheel when you open these applications and reduces the performance
of other Office applications too. Let me assist you with the issue.
The issue might have caused due to add-ins or due to non-Microsoft programs conflicting with Office applications or might be
due to issues with installation. Follow the steps mentioned and check:
Step 1: Open Office applications in safe mode to check if the issue is caused by add-ins:
Refer to the link mentioned which explains how to open Office applications in safe mode. If Office applications work fine in
safe mode then follow the complete article to disable the add-ins:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspX
Step 2: Boot the system in clean boot:
Clean boot is performed to disable all startup programs and 3rd party services on the machine and check if they are conflicting
with the Office program.
Refer to the link mentioned to boot the system in clean boot:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After checking in clean boot ensure to reboot the system in normal mode which is
explained in the same article.
If Office applications work fine in clean boot then follow the complete article, perform advanced clean boot to check which program
is causing the conflict. Once you have found the problem program, contact appropriate technical support team to update the program
