MS Word - How do I highlight trailing spaces

Recently, I've had to start using Word and there's something I need to do, but can't figure out how.  I need to highlight a phrase and any trailing space(s).  The problem is, Word will not highlight the trailing spaces(s).

I've tried highlighting.
I've tried shading.
I've tried changing the trailing space to an Em Dash
I've tried changing the trailing space to an En Dash
I've tried changing the trailing space to a nonbreaking space

Let me give a better example (ignore the quote marks, only used for reference)

"ABCD  WXYZ    "

I want to highlight the spaces after the Z, but I can't get Word to do it.

I had someone suggest putting a character at the end of the spaces and then changing the font color of that character to white, but for technical reasons, I can't use that suggestion.  Anyone know how to do this?

Answer
Answer
Type a letter before the closing quote and then add a non-breaking space.  Then highlight the text including the letter and then delete the letter BUT leave the non breaking space and then the spaces after the WXYZ should remain highlighted - at least they did when I tried it.
Hope this helps,
