Microsoft Word 2013 stops working and shuts down when i save

A lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes:

Do you have Abbyy Finereader installed on the PC? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013.  See:

Do you have “Fun Tools” add-in? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013

Do you have Toshiba Book Reader installed on the PC?  It has been reported that uninstalling that brings Office back to working status.

Do you have the Acrobat PDFMaker add-in.  It has been reported that uninstalling that overcomes an issue with a message appearing that states "The document contains macros. Macro support for this application is disabled. Features requiring VBA are not available. Would you like to open this document as a read only?"

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.old as was mentioned in:

From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

Doug -- thanks for your efforts but none of the fixes have worked for me.

This is specifically related to Microsoft Word 2013 shutting down when saving to Skydrive/OneDrive.  This has nothing to do with Word not starting at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I can't believe my firm spent almost $1k for the 2013 OFFICE software and many hours of installing and this is the terrible product we get in return.

my system info:

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

HP 8100 Elite SFF PC

8 GB of RAM

Intel Core i5CPU 3.33GHz

Like I said, any help would be greatly appreciated.  This is so frustrating.  I am at the point where I am ready to never use office again -- any suggestions for other word software??  THANKS!!

Thanks for that suggestion which obviously gets around it.  But what I want to do is to open files directly from OneDrive while I am in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.,  I can do it on some PC's but not on my principle desktop PC.  There must be some solution rather than use a workaround?

I'm assuming that the files open in Office Online (previously called Office Web Apps) on the machines where it works? Or have you found a way to make desktop applications open files that you click in OneDrive?

Yes.  The files open in Office Online on this PC too as well as the others.  It's just that on this one I cannot open files in the OneDrive directory from within an MS Office programme.
