Headers in Word 2013 not updating or saving changes

Hi,

I am having an issue with headers in some word documents. These documents were created in a previous version of Word. When I open the 2 page document the header on page 1 states 'page 1 of 1' and the header on page 2 states 'page 2 of 2'.

It should read '1 of 2' and '2 of 2' and once I click on the header it updates correctly to this. I then proceed to 'Save as' and close the file but when I reopen the file it has reverted to what it was before the save i.e.  '1 of 1' and '2 of 2'.

Has anyone seen this before or know how to fix it? It is happening with multiple documents and I have tested on a few different computers running 2013 and it is the same.

This is an old issue, though less common in recent versions of Word. Try updating the printer driver. For more, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/pagexofy.htm.

Hi Stefan thanks for the reply. We have a number of print drivers installed from the print server. Is there a particular driver that is known to cause this issue ?

Thanks , (I've noticed its the same on 2010)

Sorry, no specific printer model comes to mind. Just try updating the driver for the printer that you usually use with the affected document.

Thanks Stefan but all the installed printers that are pushed out via GPO have the latest drivers installed.

If possible, experiment with a completely different printer model. Or you could try some of the other fixes at http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/pagexofy.htm.
