Endnotes in Word 2013/2010 refuse to appear at end of section

Have a problem with endnotes - any help much appreciated!

I have a large document, containing several chapters. I need endnotes to appear at the end of each section. So, I put a section break (page) between two blocks of text, then converted my footnotes to endnotes, checking the option to have endnotes appear at the end of each section rather than at the end of the document. But the endnotes remain at the end of the document, not at the end of the section.

I've tried setting up new documents in both Word 2013 and Word 2010 and copying and pasting text from my existing chapters into the new document. I select the option to 'paste text only', so the endnotes all disappear. But even when I try to insert an endnote, with all the appropriate options checked, it still appears at the end of the document and not at the end of the section.

I'm completely confused. Some of these endnotes started life as footnotes in Scrivener for Windows. Don't know if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

The notes did convert successfully to endnotes? In other words, the problem is that endnotes appear incorrectly at the end of the document? In that case, redisplay the Footnote and Endnote dialog box and ensure that you set endnote placement to "End of section." Also, remember to set "Apply changes to" to "Whole document." Click Apply.

Thanks for your reply Stefan. Yes, the notes converted successfully to endnotes. I have applied exactly the steps you suggested (many times over!): while the dialogue box says that endnotes will appear at "End of section", they actually appear at "End of document".

After some experimenting, I have discovered that this problem only applies to documents containing notes that were originally imported from Scrivener, a third-party writing suite. I'm completely baffled by what this is doing to Word, though.

Are you sure the document contains section breaks? If not, "End of section" and "End of document" will be indistinguishable.

I had this question too. After searching, I found this article: https://wordribbon.tips.net/T009694_Where_Do_You_Want_Your_Endnotes.html

Basically, in the layout tab, the box to suppress endnotes was checked, so they were all being pushed to the end of the document. Found that, unchecked it, applied to whole document, and all is well. Hope this helps someone else!

Indeed, the option to suppress endnotes is useful if you want to add a section of text (for example, an appendix) after your endnotes. For more, see http://wordmvp.com/FAQs/Formatting/FootnoteFAQContent.htm#TextAfterNotes.
