Bug?: How do I create a hyperlink from Word 2013 to a particular Powerpoint slide?

I have tried to add a hyperlink from my Word 2013 docx-file to a particular slide in my Powerpoint 2013 pptx-file. Here are my reproduction steps:

1. Highlight some text in Word

2. Click Insert->Hyperlink

3. In the dialog that pops up, select Existing File...->Current Folder->myfile.pptx->Bookmark

Word then tries to parse the file and a progress bar pops up and after this completes, I get the error: "Microsoft Word could not open this file or parse a file of this type"

Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Answer

You can't use the Bookmark button for this, because there are no bookmarks in a PowerPoint file (other than within a video or audio clip, but that's some other kind of bookmark).

The first requirement, at least for Office 2013, is that the presentation must be saved as a slide show (*.pps or *.ppsx) file. If you try to hyperlink to a slide in a .ppt or .pptx file, the hyperlink will always open at slide 1.

In Word's Insert > Hyperlink dialog, after selecting the PowerPoint file so it appears in the Address box, type the # symbol and the desired slide number at the end of the file name. For example, the address test.ppsx#3 will open at slide 3.

For reference, read http://www.ellenfinkelstein.com/pptblog/link-to-a-specific-powerpoint-2003-2007-or-2010-slide-from-microsoft-word-or-excel/ and especially the comment by "Antares" of September 18, 2012.
