Browse button not working in Word 2013

I have Office 2013 student edition.  If I try to invoke the Browse button anywhere in Word, i.e File Open/Save or modifying directory paths in Options/Save, the button is enabled but does not do anything so I cannot access my computer's file system.

The browse button still works in Excel and PowerPoint.

I don't have any add-ins enabled.

Tried safe mode.

Tried classic.

I have followed the suggestions that were made in 2 similar posts by Remko van Roekel with no success.  Both those threads seemed to end without a resolution.

I need help - Word, of course, is USELESS without the ability to browse.

Hello there,

In order to help us resolve this issue we request the following information.

  • Do you have any other version / edition of Office installed along with Office Home and Student 2013? Check in the Programs and Features menu and please let us know; you can access Programs and Features from Control Panel > Programs and / or Programs and Features. If yes, then please let us know the versions / editions installed alongside Office Home and Student 2013.
  • In case you do not have multiple versions of Microsoft Office installed then let us know if the issue in Word 2013 happens with a particular document or with some / all Word documents.
  • Is your computer connected to any network? Are you on a workgroup or domain network? You can check this by launching the Computer Properties – Start > right-click on Computer > Properties or Start > right-click on your name or account picture at the top right of the start menu > Properties.
  • If you have already followed all the steps suggested in the posts you have mentioned then have you also followed the steps to repair / reinstall Office 2013? If not then let us try the following steps to repair Office 2013.
  • Is this issue with Browse not working limited to only Word 2013 or do you also face the same issues in other applications as well? Try the same in Excel 2013.

Method 1

Please follow these steps to repair Office 2013:

Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and / or Programs and Features.

  1. Click the Office 2013 program and then click on Change.
  2. Click Quick Repair
  3. Once competed restart your computer.

Check if you are able to access Office applications from Windows Explorer.

If the above step did not work then we shall un-install and re-install Office 2013.

Method 2

Run the Office 2013 FIXIT tool from the following article to remove your current Office 2013 installation.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

Note: Save the FIXIT to the desktop before running it if you’re working on a 64 bit Windows.

Now try re-installing Office 2013 again. After re-installing Office 2013 make sure to restart your computer.

Check if you are now able to access the browse options on Word 2013.

If you face any issues while re-installing the Office suite, you may refer to the following KB article
which discusses about common Office installation issues and see if it helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2822317

Hope the above information helps. Please let us know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Hi-

I have tried all these strategies and I just tried uninstalling using FixIt and reinstalling.  It still doesn't work.

The computer is brand new so there were no previous installs of older versions of Office.

The problem is with the Browse feature and not related to any documents.  Browsing also doesn't work if I try to change a path in my settings, like where I want Word to autosave documents.

The browse functionality works in both Excel and Power Point.

I am connected to a LAN.

Thank you for your help.

Meg

Since the problem appears to be specific to Word 2013, you should troubleshoot for add-ins again. In addition, rename the Normal template (with Word closed) and then restart Word, to rule out any malicious code in the template.

I re-checked that no add-ins are running and also ran Word in safe mode but still have the problem.

I renamed Normal.dot and confirmed that Word created a new one.  Didn't fix the problem.

Browse button is enabled and Word appears to be "doing something" when I click it but the Browse dialog box never appears.

I'm wondering, have you ever used two monitors with the computer, so that the dialog box could be invisible (because its on "the other" monitor)?

That's a really good question and I am using two monitors, although I would imagine the dialog box is created to be topmost?  Anyway, I made sure I had no other apps open and I shrunk down the size of the Word app so I could move it around and I didn't find any dialog box buried underneath.  Then I disabled the second monitor and tried again using only one monitor and it didn't fix it.

When I use the browse button in Excel and Powerpoint, the dialog box always appears on top of the app aligned with the upper leftmost corner.

Yes, that was my thought: the dialog box on top of the document window and outside of the visible area of the screen(s) so that you can't get access to it. Of course, it's very difficult to tell if this is really the problem.

I don't think the Browse dialog box is present but not visible based on what I just tried.  I clicked Browse then pressed ALT+SPACE, which brings up the dialog box's menu (Restore, Move, Minimize, etc).  I figured if the dialog box was off the screen, I could select Move (by pressing M) and try moving it around.  However, the menu items that appeared were for the Word main window (i.e. the menu items were visible and the main window responded to any items I selected) so there was no hidden Browse dialog box.

OK, just one more test: Right-click the Windows taskbar and choose Show windows side by side from the context menu. Does that make the Open dialog box appear along with other windows?

That didn't do anything and it also just occurred to me that since the Open dialog is a modal dialog box, if it was up but hidden somewhere, I wouldn't be able to do anything in the parent window until the dialog box is closed.  Since I can still invoke other functionality in the app, I don't think the Open dialog box is being created.
