All Office Apps Work Except Word 2013

It has been months since I have able to properly use MS Word 2013 on my home computer. I purchased Office Home & Student 2013 in January, and have been having problems with Word since February.

I have repaired (the quick and the long repair), uninstalled and reinstalled Office, checked for Add-Ons (there are none, disabled or otherwise), checked the box next to "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" under Options-->Advanced, tried to reset my computer to a earlier version, installed all available updates, etc. NOTHING works.

The other applications open immediately, but Word does not open fully. The application shows on the bar at the base of my computer screen, but does not open fully. The application functions (fully opens) in Safe mode (which is how I checked for add-ons) but the window refuses to open fully when I attempt to start Word normally. No error messages appear.

I have been searching through threads for months. Unless someone has a fix that WORKS, I am going to have to demand my money back from Microsoft. I bought Office 2013 SPECIFICALLY because Word is an application I use daily. To not have had access to it all this time on my home computer has been beyond ridiculous. What's even more frustrating is that I never had these problems with Windows 7. It just seems to be the "joy" of Windows 8 and Office 2013 that leave me ready to tear my hair out.

Solutions BEYOND what I've already tried would be appreciated.

A lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes:

Try to run word in safe mode by typing winword/safe.

If th
at
does not helpthen, in the search box type winword --> Word 2013 will be displayed --> right click on it --> Select Properties --> Go to the compatibility tab --> Check to see if there is a check mark next to compatibilty mode.

If it is checked then uncheck it and then uncheck the option of Run as Administrator if its checked.

Now run the word

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver
NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.oldas was mentioned in:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/microsoft-word-has-stopped-working-when-i-close/8375b5b6-4f7e-46ed-a02b-90152ecad287#LastReply

From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

That fix is described at ...

http://www.dilloway.co.uk/there-was-a-problem-sending-the-command.html

It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

For the problem of nothing appearing when you start typing in a blank document in Word in Office 365 Home Premium, and you hear a bell sound with each keypress, but no characters appear, disable the SMARTInk add-in for an interactive whiteboard.

Thanks. I've read your email on the other threads and attempted some of what you've mentioned, but again, still not working. As I said, I have no error messages. It starts but it doesn't fully open up where the other apps will.

Hi,

Thank you for posting the question in Microsoft Community.

I need more details to assist you with the issue:

Do you have dual monitors?

Try the steps below and check if it helps:

Check if you are able to access the Word application from the program files location.

· Hold Windows key + R.

· In Run window type or copy and paste the following command %programfiles%

· Go to Microsoft Office, Office 15 and look for Winword.exe.

You may also create the short cut for the application on to the desktop and then try the steps below and check if it helps:

Once you find Winword.exe in the program files location, you need right click on it and click create shortcut.

Go to the desktop and then follow the steps below:

  1. Right click on the Word short cut icon and select "Properties." A new window will appear with options specific to Microsoft Word.
  2.  Click on the tab labeled "Shortcut." There will be a field labeled "Run" with the options of Maximized, minimized, and normal window. Select the "Maximized" option. Click "Ok" and the properties window will close.
  3. Close Word if it hasn't been closed and restart. The program should now open all documents in maximized windows.

If the above steps fail, you may also start the computer in clean boot mode and check if Word opens in full screen mode.

Refer to the link below to know how to start the computer in clean boot mode:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Ensure to restart the computer to normal mode (Step 3 in the above link) once the troubleshooting is complete.

Clean boot is performed to disable all startup programs and 3rd party services on the computer and check if they are conflicting with the Office program. If so, you may disable the unwanted software which conflict with the suite or update the same.

You may also refer to the link below which discuses about the similar issue:

Let us know the result.

Thank you.

Hi, thanks for the feedback.

I tried both suggestions, but neither works. Winword.exe will not open fully, and when I ran a clean boot, the program still would not open fully.

If it's not caused by another application or service interference, what else might be the issue?

Other thoughts?

PS. No, I don't have dual-monitors. Forgot to say that on the front side. :)

I still have the same problem. would the computer make a difference? I have an hp envy touchsmart with the hybrid hard drive. I am also really annoyed that it is not working and I am not getting any help that is worth calling help. also, when I right click on the shortcut, there is no properties tab. I have never been able to check if it is in compatibility mode. I have also never got it to open at all.

I would be very surprised if the type of computer made any difference.  Not so however about some of the bloatware that it may have been installed by the manufacturer.

See the Article “Why can’t I start my Office 2013 application at:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

If that does not help, then you might remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

saving it to your computer and then running it.

Then reinstall Office by logging into
www.office.com/myaccountwith your registered email address and click Install Office.

I have tried all that with no success. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not fix the problem.

At this rate, is the only option left to demand my money back and use a different word processing software? This should NOT be this difficult.

I opened it in my guest account and that worked fine. What does that mean? would it have something to do with my account being a Microsoft account?
