Is it possible to use Office 2013 without an internet connection?

I am using Office 2013 on a Windows 8 OS. If I am offline, which happens regularly, then I cannot OPEN any of the Microsoft Office 2013 programs, let alone use them. Why is this? What is the obsession with being connected to the internet to use a program bought and installed on my laptop.

Is Microsoft so out of touch with its customers that Microsoft do not realise that users of their products do not always sit behind a desk, in an air conditioned office... some of us actually travel the world where internet connections are not always readily accessible, yet still have the need to use Word, compose emails (to be sent at a later date), produce spread sheets, etc.

I am beginning to find Microsoft increasingly vile in their obsessions for consumer cash and privacy invasion, over and above delivering a user friendly product and good service.

Which suite do you have? What exactly happens when you try?

The products should be usable - at most, you'll have a banner under the ribbon that says you are unlicensed. You are limited in the number of days you work unlicensed before going online to re-confirm the subscription. If you are unlicensed too long, you lose editing & creating and can only read.

Hi Diane, thanks for the reply.

I am using (or trying to use) Office Professional 2013 - not 365 or any of the other ridiculous "subscription" based products.

When I click on any of the Office program icons in my desktop toolbar, when I am offline, I get the "click to run" icon temporary pop-up, attempting to stream via the net as the program tries to launch. Since I am not online, the "click to run" cannot connect and thus stream, therefore the program will not launch and is unusable. It just sits there feebly attempting to connect and remains at 0% stream.

No issues whatsoever when I am online.

Would it not seem more practical for "click to run" recognising the difference of when a user is online or offline and carrying out any necessary updates/invade privacy the next time the user is online?

Cloud based products are good in some respects but have fatal flaws - whoever designs them sits in a nice office, surrounded by massive IT infrastructure. These program designers need to get out of the office and in to the third world, where a lot of first world customers use their products when travelling for business.

I am not a big fan of Windows 8 - it appears to be much faster and slicker but if I wanted Apps I would have bought an Apple product (since they've been producing these a lot longer than Microsoft); and if I wanted garish colours and big program icons, I'd have bought a nice little children's computer for under fives. I very rarely use the "Metro" start screen, I go straight to the desktop and simply use the computer like... a computer.

If this is the route Microsoft wishes to go down then fair enough, I will simply switch to Apple and do the job properly.

Thanks for your time.

Rant over.

;-)

xx

Do the icons say office on demand?   If they are the normal office applications, you do need to install them while online (everything is click to run) - but once installed, they are like old fashioned installs and they work offline.

Office on demand is different - it's a temp version of office you can use anywhere and it only works while logged into your Microsoft account (liveid). Some versions of office include the right to use ood.

No, they are not "on demand" - they are normal, standard Office Professional 2013.

Did you run the install once while connected so everything was downloaded and installed? Open each app and verify they work. After that, you don't need to be connected for at least a few days. I'm not sure exactly how long you can go without connecting - I've not tested it for more than 2 - 3 days with Wi-Fi off.

Yes, I installed Office Professional 2013 whilst connected to Broadband, the installation was fine and I received the confirmation email to say the installation was complete.

Click to run and all cloud based products are fine and useful - but make programs useless if they are not connected to the internet. A waste of investment for those users who actually travel the world where infrastructure is less capable and programs "wither away and die". It feels like I've been swindled, leaving a bad taste of customer dissatisfaction.

My loyalty to Microsoft is waning fast.

In file > office account (or account, depending on the app)  what is the exact version name and version number? I'll see what i can find out about this problem.

Yes it is possible to use office 2013 applications offline but you can't save to Skydrive without an internet connection.Let me confess that initially I thought it was impossible to do so at which point I did not know that when you are half through streaming it can't be done. But now that streaming is completed I can work in Word or Excel, Onenote,etç,offline, however, saving to Skydrive as I have already indicated above, is not possible without an internet connection.

Did it need to stream repeatedly for the install to finally work offline?
