Word Spell Check Box too small

In word 2010 (I don't know about other versions), when one does a spell check, the text containing a spelling query appears in the top box, headed "Not in Dictionary", and Word's suggestions in the "Suggestions" box below.

The "Not in Dictionary" box is too small, because the word under query is quite often out of sight, at the bottom of the box, and one has to scroll down to see it. Obviously that is not a big issue, but it is annoying, especially as I don't recall this problem ever happening in Word 2000.

Is there any way to either a) make the "Not in Dictionary" bigger, so that it shows all the text under query, or b) restrict the amount of text that appears in the "Not in Dictionary", so that it shows all the text under query.

Thanks in advance for any sugestions

Hi,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community.

I would need more information to assist you with the issue:

What exactly do you mean by ‘The ‘Not in Dictionary’ box is too small’?

Also it would be better if you provide a screen shot of the issue to help you better.

Thank you

As you can see, the "Not in Dictionary" box is too small, because the word under query [Waechter] is out of sight.

One has to scroll down to see it, which never used to happen in the 200-2003 Word programs.

Is there any way to either a) make the "Not in Dictionary" bigger, so that it shows all the text under query, or b) restrict the amount of text that appears in the "Not in Dictionary" box, so that it shows all the text under query.

This is a bit strange. Word usually manages to scroll the highlighted word into view. When you see this, is the paragraph unusually long? Or is there some other pattern that you see? Is the word in a table cell, for example?

That's the problem. It is yet another bizzarre behaviour by Word 2010.
It is just normal text - no table, bullets or anything else.

Yes, the paragraph is verbose, and the problem does not appear with short paragraphs, where the sentence all fits in the screen.

But previous versions of Word never behaved like this with long paragraphs - the offending word was always brought into sight/focus.  Now, with Word 2010, it is hidden below the line and one has to scroll down to it to see what is is.

How long paragraphs are we talking about here? Could you give an example?

Dear Stefan

The problem occurs whenever a sentence is longer than 4 lines of the spell check box, and a word under query is beyond the 4th line, as seen in the graphic.

But for the record, the specific sentence under query in this case was:

"France will now need 0.5% growth each quarter to meet a government forecast for subdued 1% growth in 2014, Natixis Asset Management chief economist Philippe Waechter estimated."

So why does Word not automatically scroll down to the word it is querying?

Actually, when I test your example sentence in Word 2010, I get the exact same result:

As you can tell, the word is highlighted in the document but not visible in the "Not in Dictionary" box.

If you have noticed this only recently, it may have been caused by a recent update to Office 2010.

Thanks Stephan, but your answer does not help at all.
How do I fix the problem?

And no I haven't only just noticed it - it is just one of the many, many, many things about Office 2010 that make it quite useless and user-unfriendly in comparison to Office 2000.

And no - it was not an update - it was a brand new install in a brand new PC.

Well, as I wrote, I can reproduce it, which tells us that the problem isn't with your system. I'll see what I can find out. I'll post back.

To clarify, with "Office update," I was referring to the automatic updates installed via Microsoft Update (in Control Panel).

As 2 weeks have gone by without an answer or solution, I guess we must conclude that the Word Spelling function is faulty and there is no way to fix the problem.

How unusual - yet another flaw in a Microsft product.

I wonder if they know how to make products without flaws?
