Word 2010 Ref Fields not working

After a recent update, it appears that Ref fields no longer updated via printing or manually when the referenced field is a content control with the default helper info (that greyed out uneditable text).  Updating the content control and manually updating (or via printing) the "Ref field" field code, never updates the "Ref field" to the new value in the content control.

Does anyone know what is going on?

I can't seem to get it to work unless I edit the field and click OK after filling the content control.  Doing this before filling the value does not fix the issue, and manually updating all fields in not acceptable because this was done to make entry in these word forms simpler for the user.

In File>Options>Display, is there a check mark in the box for "Update fields before printing" in the Printing options section of the dialog?

What do you mean by manually updating the fields?  Are you using CTRL+a and then pressing F9

What do you mean by editing the field?

Hope this helps,

I meant to mention that "Update fields before printing" is turned on, but it still does not work.

Any of the options to update a ref field (selecting everything and pressing F9, right clicking on a field and selecting "Update Field", viewing a print preview) do NOT cause the field to be updated.

Manually editing the field is right clicking on the ref field, selecting "Edit Field" and then clicking ok on the Field edit dialog box that comes up.

I know this all worked properly before as I was doing this on my machine and so were my co-workers no less than a or two month ago.  I only needed to go to the print preview window for the fields to update, but it no longer works.

I hope someone can enlighten me as to why this is now malfunctioning.

My guess is that a bug was introduced in one of the latest patches.

Is this happening with all documents, or just one particular document.  If the latter, try copying everything except for the final paragraph mark and pasting it into a new document (to eliminate any possible corruption of the document) and see if that overcomes the problem.

If not, if you send me a copy of the document, I will investigate the issue.

It is hard to say that it is happening with all documents, but I have tested a few and they all have the same problem.  We have two in particular which we use as starter templates that were created before this started happening, one in April, the other in August of this year.

I just sent a test file to your mvps email address.

Glad to hear that you are getting this as well.  (This is paraphrased & altered from the original email, however the basic information remains the same).

From: Doug Robbins

Hi Shaggee,

I ran into the original problem, which I now believe to be something to do with the presence of the Content Controls.

In the sent document, I have used Built-in Document Property Content Controls as detailed on the following page of Greg Maxey’s website

http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tip_pages/repeating_data.html

Regards,

Doug Robbins

It is odd that this behaviour used to work correctly a few months ago, but no longer does.

I think that this is an inadvertent change made by Microsoft.

P.S. I posted this so others could have this info as well.
