Word 2010 file icons appear as text file icons after upgrade to Win 8.1

I just upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After reinstalling my MS Office 2010 Professional, all my Word document icons appear as text file icons. No other Office files have this issue.

When I double click, Word opens the docs just fine, so it's not a association problem.

It appears to only be an icon issue.

I already ran the Office Repair program.

Any advice?

Hi Rhodes,

Do you have a disc and the product key for Office 2010 suite?

If yes, you may uninstall Office 2010 suite using the ‘fix it’ tool from the article below this will remove all the installed components of Office 2010 from the computer. Once the uninstallation is completed you may reinstall Office 2010 using the installation source file and the product key.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

Note: Try to save the fix it tool to the desktop and then run it to remove Office.

If ‘fix it’ tool failed to run, you may try the manual removal of Office 2010 step from the above article.

If you do not have a disc and if you have purchased a traditional retail copy, you may refer to the backup link to download Office 2010 and install it using your product key.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/microsoft-office-2010-backup-FX101853122.aspx

If the above steps fail, you may create a new Windows user account using the following link and verify the status.

I hope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Try re-registering Word as follows: Exit Word if it is running. Hold the Windows logo key as you press R; in the Run dialog box, type winword /r and press Enter. (Note that there is a space before the slash, but not after it.) After the configuration has completed, see if there is a difference.

Interesting, if not odd, results.

Now the old .doc files show the old icon, but the newer .docx files' icons still look similar to the icon for text files. When viewing the list of files in Windows explorer, instead of labeling these .docx files as Microsoft Word Document files, it labels them as DOCX files, while the older forms are labeled as Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document files.

As Alice says...curiouser and curiouser.

Thanks for the suggestion. Almost there!

I do have the install disk and the product key.

Before following your advice I ran the repair utility again. No luck.

I then uninstalled and reinstalled. Still no luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

This is peculiar. But since file associations work, that is, you can double-click Word icons and the files open in Word, I would leave it at that (frustrating as it may be).

Uninstalling and reinstalling may not improve the situation, and it will definitely be time-consuming, so I wouldn't recommend that route if it isn't absolutely necessary.
