Word 2010 deletes spaces between words when printing

Hello everyone. When I use Word 2010 and then print the document, Word deletes a space between words every hundredth word or so.  This happens to all documents and happens on different networks and printers as well.  Is anyone else experiencing this?

Answer

Open Word in safe mode and then check if you’re facing the same issue. To open Word in Safe mode follow the steps given below:

1)    Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run

2)    Copy and paste the following command and then press Enter:

                  WinWord /safe

If the documents are printed correctly using Word in safe, disable the add-in(s) for Word 2010.

If the issue still persists then change the default printer on the computer to ‘XPS document writer’ to verify if it prints correctly. For information on how to change the default printer on Windows 7, click here.

If the documents are printed correctly using ‘XPS document writer’, install the latest printer driver for the problem printers.

Does it happen when you print using Network printers only or even the local printers?

Check the print view whether it comes up fine or not.

You may want to check to see if you have the latests printer drivers installed.  They are usually downloadable from the company that makes the printer.

This same thing happens to me (deleting spaces) but I didn't know about it until two people returned documents I sent them and they corrected the missing spaces. Both of them are using stand-alone printers. (It's been printing correctly on my printer - just deleting the spaces when I send it to someone else for editing.) I've also had problems with the tabs being changed when I send it to someone else.

It is usually associated with abandoned temp files in the user's temp folder or an incompatible printer driver. Try emptying the temp folder (seehttp://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm). Then check with the manufacturer to see if you have the latest printer driver: delete and reinstall the printer.

It is still the printer driver. Word interrogates the printer driver to work out how to display the page as it will be printed: every printer is slightly different. This particular bug seems to be that Word has lost contact with the printer driver. It mainly seems to concern HP drivers. Often, just closing Word and then reopening it sorts it out - until next time!

Please move this to a separate thread or the right forum if necessary -

I have no printers of any type installed on my system (and haven't had in the past on this install of Windows 7 64-bit, so there's nothing to clean out). My system is thoroughly maintained (I run a site called TweakGuides.com - I know how to keep a Windows system in tip-top condition).

I've also disabled a range of options in Word to ensure that basic documents remain as basic documents, free of smart tags and other unnecessary embedded data. I even disable all autocorrect functions as a matter of course.

I still find that any document I create in Word 2010 will display randomly missing spaces when viewed in Word 2007. It makes no difference if I save the document with compatibility mode on or off, the spaces will repeatedly disappear. If I view the document using Windows Wordpad, I can see that the spaces haven't actually been deleted, so it seems to be a Word 2007-specific issue.

As such, I'm convinced it's a compatibility bug, as within Word 2010 itself these space deletions never appear, only when viewed or edited in Word 2007. This is fairly serious as you can imagine, because it means documents I send to people using Office 2007 (a large proportion of Word users) look sloppy as a result. Editing them is also pointless because as soon as they're saved in Word 2010 and sent back, a similar number of random spaces are deleted.

You should just start a new thread yourself.

If you want to send one of the documents to me at dkr[atsymbol]mvps[dot]org, I will see if it demonstrates the problem here when opened in Word 2007.

However, I regularly switch documents backward and forwards between various versions of Word (2003, 2007 and 2010) and have never experienced that issue.

Word needs/must have a printer driver. It interrogates the printer driver in order to determine how the page will be set out on the printed page by a particular printer. Every printer is different. If you don't have a printer driver, Word can't work properly. I'm surprised that Word even starts.
