Word 2010 - Autocorrect Functionality - activation

In Word 2010, does anyone know what the specific actions are that activate Autocorrect?

I know that typing the autociorrect shortcut name, and then hitting space will result in the autocorrect replacement, however I have several autocorrect items that must be followed by a hyphen ("-").  In this case, the autocorrect does not activate.  The alternative is to hit space > backspace > "-" > then resume typing.  This makes it more trouble to use than simply typing the long version.

Is there a way to customize this feature such that a hyphen would also trigger the autocorrect function?

If you know which words will always require a hyphen just add a hyphen to the full word in the "Replace" box in Options/Proofing/AutoCorrect.  e.g., Tx1 should read "University of Texas-"

Add Tx1 to the Replace box and University of Texas- to the With box.

Thank you for your response, however the problem is slightly different. In the following example, I would type "sp" for "space-" followed by a number to get the final result of "space-45".

When I create the shortcut as described above, I need to hit return, or space to get auto correct to recognize the shortcut.  Using the above example, i would get "space- 44", which is not what I want.

If I could get autocorrect to use the hyphen character as an additional trigger for the autocorrect, that would solve the problem.

What I am hoping to find is more infomation on how to customize autocorrect to work the way I need it to.

Any ideas?

You could create an AutoText entry instead. Type the name assigned to the entry and press F3 to insert it (that is, you don't need a following space or punctuation as a trigger).

Remember that the name must be unique, so that it is identified by Word.

Here's a suggestion that might help.  I use AutoCorrect a LOT.  And the way I remember my shortcuts is this:  I double the last letter of the shortcut.

Let's say I want a shortcut (AutoCorrect) for the term "Missing In Action". I would use the obvious abbreviation of "MIA" but I'd double the last letter and make the shortcut "miaa" (I always go with lowercase). Doubling the last letter usually lets me avoid using common acronyms (like "MIA" which is not a shortcut I'd want to use since I might want to use "MIA" as text.

Some other examples:

Shortcut                                         Text

bjj                                      Bob Jones (your name here)

htt                                     high technology

brr                                     best regards

tabr                                   Thanks and best regards,

lftmy                                  Look forward to meeting you,
