In Word, captions make use of the Caption style. Look at the settings for that style. In particular, make sure that it isn't formatted as hidden text.
To edit the style: Press Ctrl+Shift+S to display the Apply Styles pane. Type in
Caption and then click the Modify button.
I'm not sure what you mean by "locked for editing," though. Does the program freeze? Or what are the symptoms?

I tried your suggestion, and the Caption Style does not appear to be the problem.
"Locked for editing" meant that I had to go to the permissions screen to change permissions. The symptoms are even more complex. The page size and orientation were both changed, too.
Before consulting the community, I used the Office 2010 DVD and tried the "Repair" option, and it did me not good.
Clearly a mystery.
Thanks for your help!
Bob

Note that what you are seeing in Word 2010 definitely isn't normal behavior. Since it happens with more than one document, it probably isn't document corruption. A corrupt template could be causing it.
Have you tried exiting Word and renaming the Normal template (assuming that is the one you use)? You should also troubleshoot for malfunctioning add-ins. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541/en-us/ (How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word).

As you can see by scanning the thread, none of the people posting the problem ever came back to say that they fixed it, other than PanchoMulongeni's workaround which probably doesn't help anyone else.
Since you find that switching to a different user avoids the problem, that indicates that the cause is in either the Normal template or an add-in (both of which are specific to one user profile). Try the procedures suggested by Stefan Blom in this thread on September 2, 2013.
