Page Numbering when inserting additional pages

I have a 10 page document, page numbers 1-10. I need to insert 3 pages after page 3. These pages are to be numbered 3a,3b,3c. The page numbering would then continue 4-10.
Any ideas how to insert a field to achieve this would be appreciated?

The original page  numbers must remain.

Answer
  1. Insert a Next Page section break at the beginning of page 3a, and another one at the end of page 3c. (On the Page Layout tab, click Breaks and choose Next Page. If there's already a manual page break there, remove it.) Your document now has three sections.
  2. Double-click in the header on page 1 to open it. The Header & Footer Tools tab appears.
  3. On the Header & Footer Tools tab, click Next. The blue tag on the bottom edge of the header says "Header -Section2-".
  4. On the Header & Footer Tools tab, click Link to Previous to turn it off.
  5. Click the Next button again to go to "Header -Section 3-". Click Link to Previous again to turn it off.
  6. While the cursor is still in "Header -Section 3-" click Page Number and click Format Page Numbers. In the dialog, click in the Start At box and type the number 4. Click OK.
  7. Click the Previous button to go back to "Header -Section2-".
  8. Click Page Number and click Format Page Numbers. In the dialog, click in the Number Format box and choose "a, b, c".  Click in the Start At box and type the number 1. Click OK.
  9. To the left of the page number that now appears as "a", type the number 3.
  10. Close the Header pane and check your new page numbers.

> Any thoughts on how the page numbers (including the new 3a, 3b, 3c can be picked up in a TOC?

They can't be picked up automatically. The TOC will show the letters a, b, or c, but not the 3 that you typed.

If you create the TOC as the last thing before distributing the document, you can put the cursor in the TOC and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to change it from a field to plain, non-updating text. Then you can type the 3 where it's needed. If the document is updated again afterward, you'll have to rebuild the TOC from scratch.
