Office 2010 Word 2010 Right-Click a Picture, and "Edit Picture" is Gray-Out

When I right-click a jpg picture with the mouse pointer that is embedded in Word 2010 document, I get the menu below, How can I enable Edit Picture or why is it grayed out?

Can I program it to use a different picture editor, like Paint.NET, FastStone Image Viewer, or Paint Shop Pro?

I checked MSPaint and Microsoft Office Picture Manager is installed and working correctly.

Thanks

In what way do you want to Edit the Picture?  If you use the Save as Picture item (the next one down) to can save the picture as a separate file and then open it in a picture editor.

Hi

If you double click on it, it should open for editing, or if you still have the image on file directly in sert it into the doc and you can edit it clicking on to the image and use picture tools from the ribbon.

Neither this answer nor the first one actually responds to the question. First of all, neither one answers why "Edit picture" is grayed out and apparently completely unavailable in Word 2010. In previous Word versions, you could right-click on a clip art image, choose edit picture and select parts of the image to change the color or shape or to even delete it from the image. Let's say I wanted a Smiley Face to be purple instead of yellow. I could do that with a couple of clicks. Now, I must save it as a picture or copy it to a photo editing software before I can do anything creative with it. Secondly, double clicking does nothing. Finally, the Picture Tools ribbon is very limited, offering very few options.

The company I work for has moved to Office 2013, and I drag and drop a jpg into a blank Doc and right-click the jpg and Edit Picture is still grayed out.

Somebody from Microsoft Word team should answer this question "Is this by design"?

What is the purpose of right-click the jpg and Edit Picture.

Can I enable it?

What program was it intended to start?

Is right-click the jpg and Edit Picture a place holder for some future exciting feature?

When can we Word users expect to see this exciting feature enabled?

In what way do you want to edit the picture?  I would use a graphics program such as the free IrfanView.

However, if you right click and select Format Picture, you get the options shown:

This command hasn't worked with bitmap images since Word 2000, which was paired with the very handy Microsoft Photo Editor (one of the few programs you can paste a PowerPoint or Word image into and get a full-resolution original file).

It's intended to work with vector art, like EMF files.

Here is an excerpt from a Word 2013 Microsoft Office Official Academic Course textbook that I teach from:

1. Select the clip art image you inserted into the document during the preceding exercise to display the Picture Tools Format tab .
2. Right-click the image, then select Edit Picture from the shortcut menu. Word automatically moves the clip art to the upper-left corner of the document to begin formatting.

Microsoft obviously thinks the 'edit picture' function on the right-click pop-up menu is a valid way to format pictures.  I tried with both clip art and jpg.
