Hello Kevin,
From the provided description, I understand that Word exits slowly.
I know how this concerns you and will assist you to resolve this issue.
I'd like to ask you few question to assist you better:
1) Are you experiencing this issue on all Word documents (new or existing) or few specific documents?
2) What is the size of Word documents on which you're working on?
Let's start Word in safe mode following below mentioned instructions mentioned, open the Word document (Ctrl + O) and then try closing it and verify the result.
* Hold Windows key + R.
* Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:
Winword /safe
Note: There is space between Winword and '/'.
If Word safe works, disable the add-ins following steps mentioned below and determine the problem causing add-in:
a) Click on File menu, click Options, Add-ins, Go button besides Manage:
Com-in Add.
b) Check if there are add-ins listed, clear the check box.
c) Close Word and restart it.
d) Disable each add-in one at a time, restart the Word, and repeat the above procedure. If the issue reappears again, it will help you to determine which add-in is causing this issue.
If issue still persists, check and post back the error log from Event viewer to know more information reason for crash:

Hi Daniel,
Just to further clarify - It is only some Word documents, new or old, that close slowly but not the same ones each time - the same documents can close correctly at other times. Document size makes no difference. Word closes correctly when no document loaded.
I have previously started Word in 'safe mode' and there is only one Add-In which was already un-ticked. I have just completed the exercise again with the same results.
Sorry, but I’m not sure which error log I need to access – think Event Viewer > Windows Log > Application – is it possible for you to guide me
Thanks.

Hello Kevin,
Thank to replying.
You can check for Office log under Application and Services Logs > Microsoft Office Alerts.
As the issue is experienced randomly we might be able to determine what is causing the problem.
Let's run 'Fix it' from the following KB link and verify the result:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
You may also change the default printer to
Microsoft XPS Document Writer or OneNote and then try working in Outlook and verify the result.
Refer to the following article for instruction on how to change the default printer driver:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-your-default-printer
Hope it helps. Reply with the result and I'll be glad to further assist you.
Thank You.
