Launching Word without Add-Ins Via Command Line

Hello,

I'm trying to launch Word 2010 without COM Add-Ins (as the WinWord.EXE process was not closing after exiting Word) via a run command using the following:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE" /a

However, on opening Word and browsing to File > Options > Add-Ins, I note that COM Add-Ins are currently loaded and active in Word.

How can I launch Word 2010 via a run command with all COM Add-Ins disabled?

Thanks

Use winword /safe or hold down the CTRL key while starting Word until asked if you want to start it in Safe Mode.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for your answer, but I don't need to run Word in Safe Mode. I need to be able to launch it 'as is' but without any Add-Ins active.

Is this possible?

Sorry to ask the obvious, but does task manager show any instances of Word still running before you try to start Word? Does /a work as expected if you kill those instances first?

Hi,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community.

Is Office installed as 32bit or 64bit version?

In order to find out the version of Office installed, you may follow the steps below:

Click on File menu near the top left of the screen.
2. Select ‘Office Account’
3. Select ‘? About Outlook’
4. Review the end of the top line which should tell you if your copy of Office 2013 is 32-bit or 64-bit

Try other short cuts available in the link below and check the result:

Post the required details so that we can further assist you.

Thank you.

Safe mode also is with a fresh normal template. Like the OP I am surprised the /a switch doesn't block COM Add-Ins.

Normally all of my installed COM Add-Ins are disabled so I never noticed. I turned one on and then checked in Word 2010 and can verify that the /a switch disabled all template Add-Ins but not .COM add-ins.

What I see here is that COM Addins are listed as "Active" even with the /a switch, but that they do not appear to be enabled - e.g. the MS Mathematics add-in I have here does not display its ribbon menu. Do you see something different?

I suspect that to ensure that the Addins do not even appear as Active, you would have to go into the Windows registry, save the values of all the relevant LoadBehaviour flags, and set them to 0 (in either HKLM, HKCU or both). Off the top of my head, I don't know what the difference in behaviour would be - it may be that the OnConnection method is called in one case but not the other.

Peter, you are correct. The Add-In I activated was the PDFMaker from Adobe which, among other things, adds a tab to the ribbon. I see that when I start using the /a switch that the Adobe Ribbon tab is not present. This is true even though it is listed as an Active Add-In.

Hello,

***

However, on opening Word and browsing to File > Options > Add-Ins, I note that COM Add-Ins are currently loaded and active in Word.

How can I launch Word 2010 via a run command with all COM Add-Ins disabled?

Thanks

Take a look at Peter Jamieson's reply to me and my response above. I also see a COM Add-In listed as active in that list, but it does not appear to actually be enabled. Is there something that the particular Add-In does in Word that you can observe to see if it is enabled?

As suggested by Doug Robbins, Safe Mode is also a good diagnostic step.
