When I try to insert a picture from a file on my computer into a Word (2010) document, all I get is the picture squished into a single line. When I point to the "line", I can se that the entire picture is there, but as soon as I releease the pointer,

you probably have the paragraph line spacing set to 'exactly'. Choose a different parameter (eg single, double, etc).
