Insert page numbering - total number of pages showing incorrect

I have a 36 page document. We have created a front page, where I have selected a "current location" and used Insert > Page Number > X of Y (where "Y" is total number of pages.

I have also used this in the headers of the subsequent pages. In the headers of all subsequent pages "Page X of Y" shows correctly. However on the front page, whenever I make changes to the document, it goes back to "Page 1 of 3" (always 3 and I don't know where this number comes from).

If I delete the page numbering and re-insert, it shows correctly, but then, when I make any changes, it defaults back to "Page 1 of 3".

What can I do to stop this from happening? Or do I have to just keep re-inserting the "Page X of Y" option?

Use Alt+F9 to toggle on the display of field codes and tell us what you see where the errant number of pages (Y) appears.

If you want to send me a copy of the document, I will investigate the issue.

Hope this helps,

Hi - sorry I had to wait for the file to become available to me again (we have a document handling system where people can edit the files - we have to take turns for editing)

The field code looks like this:

Any tips? I'm not sure I can send the file itself as there are some confidentiality issues at work... but maybe I could do something if that is really necessary.

Cheers!

That should give the correct information, but try deleting the \* Arabic \* MERGEFORMAT switches from the fields.

If after editing the document, when it has changed to 3, if you do a print preview, does it correct itself (make sure that the updating of field codes is turned on under File>Options>Display>Printing Options.
