How to use a label template in mail merge

I have downloaded at .dotx that looks good.

When I try to use it as a mail merge base, I can insert merge fields, but I cannot Updater labels, nor do I know how to propagate the initial label setup to the other 29 entries on the label.

I am sure I am missing something major here! :)

Thanks for your extensive reply.

However, I am using a standard desktop.

I have resolved my problem by just copying shapes off the template and installing them in my label.

I do know how to mail merge labels from a data source: it was trying to get the characteristics of a template into the label that was bugging me...
