How to Stop My Mouse from Scrolling the Ribbon?

In Word 2010, for example, if I select a group on the ribbon (Home, Insert, etc.) by clicking on the group name with my mouse, and then I move the mouse wheel, I end up scrolling through the groups on the ribbon.

How can I stop scrolling through the groups on the ribbon when I move the mouse wheel?

Hi,

I will assist you with the issue.

The scroll feature on the ribbon cannot be turned off. Once clicked on the tab, click on a different place in order for the scroll to not work.

Hope the information provided is helpful.

Thank you.

I don't know of any way of turning off that function.

All you can do is drag your mouse off of the ribbon ...

The action of clicking the group on the Ribbon has nothing to do with the issue. The problem is the mouse being over the ribbon when you choose to roll the mouse wheel.

Your options are:

1. Move the mouse off the ribbon first OR

2. Hold the Ctrl-Key when rolling the mouse to zoom the window instead OR

3. Minimise the Ribbon by double-clicking a tab

Thanks for everyone's help.

Unfortunately, there is no solution, only avoidance.

Perhaps a programmer somewhere who is equally annoyed with this will create a utility.

I had not noticed this, not having any reason to use the wheel while over the Ribbon. I wish I had a suggestion. I actually like it, though.

What are you expecting to happen?

What is it you want to happen?

Do you want the document itself to scroll?

BTW, "groups" describes sections of controls on a particular tab, usually with a title at the bottom. For instance, the Home tab has Clipboard, Font, Paragraph, Styles, and Editing groups. What you are referring to are the tabs themselves.

Yeah, I can't work out why BulldogXX thinks it is a problem either.

Perhaps it is an issue for those who require accessibility features because their physical movement of the mouse is restricted. Perhaps it is a problem on touchscreen/tablets like the Surface.

It is not a feature I knew before but it appears to be a useful enough function and nothing that would require a 'fix' to stop IMO.

I spend my life scrolling up and down spreadsheets, changing formats, inserting, rows, columns, cells, etc etc etc. So, I'm always flicking back and forth from sheet to ribbon, ribbon to sheet and scrolling in between. I agree with BulldogXX, its heartily annoying to click the ribbon, move back to the sheet, not quite make it and scroll, only to find the darn ribbon scrolling (seriously, can that ever be described as useful??) instead of the sheet.

In response to CK - er, Nothing. Nothing would be nice.

I agree with the OP. It's annoying. The problem is that, at least with my mouse, the scroll wheel is sensitive (if that's the right term? Perhaps it has a high resolution?) and will scroll through several tabs with one slip of my finger (i.e. several tabs away from the one I want!).

As for what I'd want to have, I have two answers. Either:

  1. Nothing.
  2. Scroll through the document instead.

Pretty disappointed that there's no option to switch it off. That said, Word 2010 is a big improvement over its predecessors, so I can live with it.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I realize that this is a bit late for this thread, but I thought I'd weigh in on this topic in case someone from MS monitors these forums.

activethistle, I agree with you (and the OP) 100%.  I flip back and forth between pages, scrolling up and down and suddenly the ribbon starts scrolling.  The value of this escapes me, since I want the tabs to be set the way I last used them, not have another tab be activated by mistake.  However, despite the fact that I don't consider the scrolling to be useful, I recognize that other people may differ, so I wouldn't dream of suggesting that they should eliminate the scrolling altogether and make it non-scrolling only.  Perhaps others can use it in ways that I can't predict.  So perhaps some of you (guessed comes to mind) should take a minute to ponder the idea that your position may not be the last word.

With all of the unending options in Office 2010, I can't imagine one more (Enable tab switching in ribbon with scroll wheel) would be so difficult or such an unreasonable request.

The value is if you have customized the ribbon to contain more tabs than will fit across the screen.
